The Media Center & Language Arts: A Collaborative Effort Researching Your Career
American Literature Research Project To prepare themselves for life after high school and/or college, 11th grade students at Forest Park High School will complete a research project on their personal career goals. Teachers will collaborate with the media specialist to assist students as they conduct their research.
Lesson Standards ELA11W – The student produces expository (informational) writing to explain an idea or concept and/or convey information and ideas from primary and secondary sources accurately and inherently. ELA11W3 – The student uses research and technology to support writing. ________________________________________
Lesson Plan Students will write a 5 page paper on at least 2 career options they are considering to pursue upon completion of high school or college. Teacher will review the steps to writing a research paper with students. In preparation for the paper, teacher will show video clip of research paper basics on Teacher Tube. http://www.teachertube.com/
Lesson Plan Con’t The Role of the Media Center Teacher will assign 3 days of media center time to be spent conducting research. On Day 1, the media specialist will go over available resources with students.
The Role of the Media Center Resources Available: Galileo Database Library collection of magazines/journals Internet sites such as, www.cnn.com, www.careermag.com, www.sciencecareers.sciencemag.org, www. Diversitycareers.com
The Role of the Media Center On Day 2 and Day 3, students will return to the media center to work independently. The media specialist will review some of the resources in the mc both print and electronic. Then students will proceed to work on their own gathering information. Students can collect this information by copying, saving it on their jump drive, or emailing it to themselves.
Research Paper Components The research paper must be a minimum of 5 pages long. The paper must by typed in Times New Roman, size 12 font, and double-spaced. The paper must have a title page, outline, and works cited page. A minimum of 3 sources.
