This season was unique in that there was no disruption from the weather – and for once fixtures were not cancelled. Due to a lot of hard work there were more 11-a-side matches than Canbury has EVER played – but this ambition meant that we were up against much bigger and stronger schools than normal. At the beginning of the winter we entered the ISFA “Small Schools” competition – and ran up against the well drilled and efficient North London King Alfred’s Having lost to them badly, at home and in the knock-out cup, we travelled up across London towards Hampstead and in a rather lame effort – lost again – and by a similarly large margin… team spirit was poor, players were too interested in playing in attack – and some refused to follow the coaches direction. It was a wake-up call as a couple of weeks before we had a ding-dong of a match versus

Slide 20

our best of local rivals – TCC. Then we had survived the 1st half through luck and good reflex goal keeping (Pouya) Canbury ended 5-1 winners. No such good fortune against the very well organised King Alfreds, eventual score 1-10. Against Hampton Court House the following week, the 1st XI ran out comfortable 2-0 winners with a smashing volley from Turkay and a stolen goal by Christo, Man of the match was Dylan M. Next was meant to be a match where TCC & Canbury were meant to combine to produce a semi-decent XI, but King Alfred's couldn’t make it at the last minute – so we played 7-a-side v each other – 3 short match – all won by Canbury – and the most spectacular over head goal by Turkay! Against CA (A) we played three 6-a-side games, all of which were won quite easily – after a shaky start which Canbury were fortuitous to edge 4-3. In March whilst the GCSE Art students sweated on their exam, the Year 10s and a couple of key Year 11s drove down to the countryside and the lovely setting of Bury’s Court. What a game! Moon Hall College started well – and went 2-0 ahead. But Canbury never gave up – and Mazigh, Robert and an own goal saw our team run out 3-2 winners.
