CAPITAL CRITERIUM | WHERE PRO CYCLING MEETS AMERICA’S MAIN STREET. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2011
OVERVIEW The Capital Criterium, popularly known as the CapCrit, is one of the D.C. metropolitan area’s major sporting attractions. First run in 2008, it is the only professional cycling race staged in our nation’s capital. In the main event, the country’s best men’s pro teams (180 athletes in all) will course through the heart of the District along Pennsylvania Avenue and across the National Mall, contesting 180-degree turns and leg-burning sprints for 65 laps. More than 25,000 spectators are expected to enjoy the action close-up and against a backdrop that features the U.S. Capitol, National Gallery and other national landmarks. ALL ROADS LEAD TO AMERICA’S MAIN STREET For the first time, a single, season-ending race will serve as both the Finals of the USA CRITS racing series AND the final race of USA Cycling’s (the sport’s governing body) National Racing Calendar. With championship titles on the line for both the men’s and women’s races, competition inside the barricades will be heated and intense. Adding to the excitement, the day will also feature the Women’s Pro Series Final and the U.S. Hand Cycling Final. As it grows in stature, the CapCrit continues to build on the District’s growing reputation for internationally acclaimed endurance sports and athletics.
