What is the Early Years Learning Framework? Australia’s first national framework to be implemented in 2012 in early childhood settings. A guide of principles, practices and outcomes to assist educators in building their curriculum and influence their practices. The Early Years learning Framework may complement, supplement or replace individual State and Territory frameworks. (Belonging, being & becoming, 2009, p. 5; Educators: Belonging, being & becoming, 2010, p. 3)

Why is the Early Years learning Framework being introduced? To ensure all children have the best start in life to create the best possible future for themselves and the nation. To enrich and extend children’s learning. To provide quality teaching and learning. (Belonging, being & becoming, 2009, p. 5).

What impacts will the framework have on early childhood educators? The framework is a lot of practices that educators have already been implementing for some time and the framework simply highlights these practices in a different context. Though the framework challenges all educators to reflect on, question and consider ways to improve their practices. (Sims, 2010, p. vi) (Educators: Belonging, being & becoming, 2011)

What impacts will the framework have on early childhood settings? Along with the implementation of the Early Years Learning Framework, there will also be the introduction of a National Quality Standards. Impacts associated with the National Quality Standards include: A change in staff to child ratios Staffing qualification requirements A new quality rating system A new national body (Australian Government: Department of Education, Employment and Workplace relations, n.d.)
