The Advanced Learning Center (ALC) welcomes you to eCourseware, our new and official learning management system beginning Fall Semester 2007. Powered by Desire2Learn (D2L - www.desire2learn.com), eCourseware offers engaging options to aid you in classroom instruction and management for your on-campus or online courses. This handout will walk you through five elements in using eCourseware.

Improved Teaching Tools Students collaborate on projects in study groups and blogs. Faculty track learning progress with eye-easy charts (Figure 1). Improved Virtual Class Meetings Classes or groups meet in virtual chat sessions, sharing a whiteboard, files, or presentations. Faculty conduct virtual office hours from anywhere. Improved Course Content Management All UofM course sections are automatically created by our Banner information system. Faculty import course content between courses or other CMS systems.

eCourseware Faculty Quick Start Introduction This iLab seeks to help faculty quickly learn how to teach and manage their courses with UofM’s Learning Management System eCourseware.

Why Teach with eCourseware? eCourseware brings to UofM several enhanced teaching strategies for on-campus or online learning. To the right, we see a sample Quiz Statistics chart from eCourseware.

Faculty Preparation for eCourseware Attend a face-to-face eCourseware Faculty Quick Start session. Select eCourseware in right margin of the ALC homepage (www.memphis.edu/alc). Choose Need face to face sessions. No need to register. Attend a Open Forum session. Come to these if you need individual help. The schedule is on the same page as the Quick Start sessions. Stay informed about the eCourseware service. 1

Importing Existing Courses’ Content Each semester Banner will automatically generate an empty course shell for each of your assigned courses. Use the Edit Course tool to import existing content from previous courses into those empty shells.. 3

Working with Third-Party Learning Tools UofM licenses several third-party academic tools for your use with eCourseware. The intent of such tools is to assist faculty in creating engaging learning experiences with students. 4

Overview of Third-Party Tools UMdrive: storing and sharing online documents. Respondus: creating quizzes and surveys. StudyMate: authoring learning puzzles and games. Turnitin: ensuing academic integrity and plagiarism protection. Wimba: recording and sharing audio presentations and discussion threads. Podcast Central: distributing a series of audio/video presentations via subscription downloads. 4

Printed eCourseware Resources Find solutions by completing a Help Request Form ticket. Call the ITD HelpDesk (901-678-8888) for immediate assistance. Join the Desire2Learn Community. Faculty will find a wealth of resources for creating and teaching eCourseware courses in the Desire2Learn Community website. Be sure to enroll with your UofM email address. 5
