Faculty Teaching iLab iLab Series Dynamic Slideshows Session Converting PowerPoints for the Web with iSpring Presented by Roy Bowery Provided by the Advanced Learning Center The University of Memphis Updated January 21, 2009
Dynamic Slideshows Series Introduction This series deals with ways you can produce engaging slideshows for your courses. Using the skills presented, you can enhance your students’ learning experiences through engaging presentations.
This iLab Session Introduction This session is “Converting PowerPoints for the Web with iSpring.” Goal: Provide a simple way to present dynamic slideshows on the Internet with the iSpring PowerPoint to Flash converter.
iLab Objectives Understand the need to convert a PowerPoint to Flash for web use. Download and install the iSpring add-on to PowerPoint. Convert a PowerPoint slideshow to Flash via the iSpring add-on. Upload the Flash movie to the Internet and link to your course or website.
Why Convert a PowerPoint? PowerPoint was not created for use on the Internet because… images, audio, or video can make .PPT files too large for the web .PPT files require the PowerPoint program for viewing The iSpring add-on will permit… faster loading files (all images, audio, or video to be compressed over 60%) viewers to see a PowerPoint via the free Adobe Flash player 1
Download and Install iSpring Learn about free iSpring add-on to PowerPoint on the iSpring Solutions website. Also see system requirements. Download iSpring for your PowerPoint program (versions 2000-2007). Close PowerPoint and install iSpring. Open PowerPoint and look for the new iSpring Free menu item. 2
Convert a PowerPoint to Flash Open PowerPoint and create your slideshow with images, narration, music, video, or any media needed. Do not use PowerPoint features not supported by iSpring. Click the iSpring Free menu and choose Publish. 3
iSpring Choices In the iSpring screen select Local Folder and check Generate HTML. Hit Publish at the bottom and iSpring will convert your PowerPoint into a Flash movie in the folder you designated.
Upload and Link the Flash Movie You have two options for uploading your published Flash movie. A. Directly upload all the files that iSpring generated to your UMdrive, eCourseware course, or website. B. Use iSpring’s free service for hosting your Flash movie at SlideBoom, provided by iSpring Solutions. It is similar to YouTube. SlideBoom allows you to link or embed your movies within your own webpages. Flash movies will generally play faster from SlideBoom, since it is a Flash streaming service. We’ll look at how to do both the direct and SlideBoom way. 4
Upload Directly to Your Site Upload all the files that iSpring generated to your website. Be sure to include all three files (.js, .html, .swf). UMdrive directions: After uploading to UMdrive, check the box by the .html file and choose Email in the UMdrive toolbar. Send or post that link to your viewers. eCourseware directions: Upload all three iSpring files to your eCourseware Course’s Manage Files page. Go to your Content tool. Choose New Topic > Course File and select the iSpring .html file.
Upload to SlideBoom Within PowerPoint click the iSpring Free menu and choose Publish. Select SlideBoom > Edit Account > Sign up for a free account and complete the sign up form. Enter your new account information in the iSpring Edit Account box and click Publish.
Upload to SlideBoom On the Publish with SlideBoom window, enter the data and check Public access if you wish anyone to view your movie. Public access allows you to embed your presentation in a webpage instead of just linking it. Embedding allows it to play in context within your content page.
Embedding a SlideBoom Show After your presentation uploads to SlideBoom, you will be brought to your account page in SlideBoom. Click on the thumbnail of the new Flash movie. You will see a page similar to the one below. To embed the movie in your webpage or eCourseware Content topic, copy the Embed into your blog code.
Embedding a SlideBoom Show Here’s a sample of how I copied the embed code from SlideBoom and pasted into a blog page I maintain. To do this, you must have access to copy text into the HTML view of your page. The advantage as you can see is that people can read about my slideshow and then watch it right there on the page.
Embedding a Slideshow into eCourseware To embed your slideshow from SlideBoom into eCourseware, go to the Content page of your course. Select New Topic > Create New File.
Embedding Slideshow into eCourseware In the eCourseware Create New File window, click the Edit HTML Source icon in the very lower left (highlighted to the right with the red box). This will allow you to paste the copied embed code.
Embedding Slideshow into eCourseware Find the <body> HTML tag in the HTML Source Editor window. Paste the embedded code from your SlideBoom slideshow, which I have highlighted here in blue. Ensure that after your pasted code, you see the closing tag </body>. Hit Update and then Save on the normal topic edit page. (You won’t see the slideshow until you are in student view).
Viewing Your Slideshow in eCourseware After saving the newly created New Course File, go to your main Content page and select that topic. You should see a page similar to the one to the left here. Notice that in the Edit Topic window, I added text above and below the slideshow to explain the context. All students need to do is click the Flash play arrow and watch your show, just like in YouTube. If they do not have the Flash Player installed, SlideBoom will direct how to install.
Finding Help with iSpring Please know that neither the Advanced Learning Center or UofM provide support for iSpring. For help with iSpring, checkout their FAQ page and other online resources. If you are interested in purchasing the iSpring Presenter Pro (business) or Master (eLearning) versions, they do offer a 50% academic discount.
This iLab Summary To use a PowerPoint on the web, conversion to Flash will increase file display speed and not require PowerPoint for viewing. Visit www.ispringsolutions.com to download and install the iSpring add-on to PowerPoint. Within PowerPoint use the iSpring menu to convert a PowerPoint to Flash. Upload the Flash movie to the Internet directly to your website or as a link from SlideBoom.com.
