"For people without disabilities, technology makes things easier. For people with disabilities, technology makes things possible.” A program of the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University

Slide 4

Learning Objectives Identify issues and opportunities related to using generic technologies as assistive tech Identify examples of specific applications that can be used as AAC List resources for information and assistance about AT and AAC

Slide 5

Mobile Technologies Portable, generic, easily-available devices that may run programs or “apps” that can be used by SLPs and our consumers Includes: “Smart” phones Tablets Music players (iPod Touch) Game systems (Nintendo DS)

Slide 6

Mobile Technologies Each product varies by: Hardware (device, manufacturer) iPad by Apple Galaxy Tablet by Samsung Mobile Operating System (platform – Windows vs Mac) Apple, Google, Microsoft, Blackberry, Palm, etc.

Slide 7

What’s the difference? Where you buy the device “iTech” = Apple iTunes (internet, program) Where you buy the apps - From the device itself Android = various manufacturers platform from Google Android Market

Slide 8

Android Accessibility varies by phone/tablet Most have text-to-speech, vision, and hearing support Swype keyboard set-up allows sliding between keys (without picking up finger) Android Market has fewer apps (for now) Beginning to see specialized apps for education and communication Alexicom AAC, TapToTalk, Voice4U

Slide 9

What is Assistive Technology? DEVICES Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA – 34CFR§300.5) “Any item, piece of equipment, or product system” “Whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized” “That is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability”

Slide 10

Mobile Technologies & SLPs Therapy Tool (SLP use) Use as therapy material Artic, phonology, language flashcards Social stories, video modeling Promote home practice or carry-over Use for SLP Data collection E-mail, documentation Assistive Technology (student use) Use for communication AAC apps from low-tech (pic boards), to mid-tech (recordable buttons w/ pics), to high-tech (adv. language layouts w/ synthesized speech) Use for hearing, vision, fine motor, behavior, and MORE

Slide 11

Features to Consider for AT Portability Durability / Mounting Volume Battery Cost / Availability Lightweight! Not designed/tested for AT (See “Accessories”) Up to 10 hrs Relatively cheap and easy to purchase/repair

Slide 12

Features to Consider for AT Funding Most “Public” options (Medicaid, Private insurance, etc.) require that a device be “durable medical equipment” Currently excludes ALL mobile technology options Some success reimbursing apps since “dedicated software” Better luck with private funding, scholarships, mini-grants, etc. So, if it works as AT, how does student get his/her one? School district policy? shared agreement with parents?

Slide 13

Access Touch screen does not require pressure (only contact) for selection May be helpful for physical limitations Alternate access methods developing Switch interfaces available (Bluetooth &/or iTech) MUST be built-in to app by developer Activate on release Scanning

Slide 14

Accessories Protective Speaker Case iMainX (iPod Touch), iAdapter (iPad) Mounting System On case, Flexible (Modular Hose) Other Stylus (Stylus Socks), keyboard, keyguard (app-specific)

Slide 15

Alternate Screen Contact Use fingerless gloves – can drag heel of hand across screen and then touch the screen to activate apps

Slide 16

Management Issues Learning about iPad basics Local Apple store, teachwithyouripad.wikispaces.com General Settings  Restrictions Lock from Adding, Removing, In-App Purchases How to prevent it being a toy Game Time Limit app Policy on loading games, videos, music? BubCap prevents from accessing home button (to switch between apps)

Slide 17

Game Time Limit Price: $0.99 Target: Productivity / Behavior Other Info: Allows adult to set passcode and time limit Alarm interrupts ANY app after designated time, requires passcode to turn off

Slide 18

Management Issues Whose iTunes account? IT, Dept, Admin, SLP, Child Who can add? Must have iTunes log-in If you customize, does it save? Or transfer to that app on other devices? All district’s devices the same? How to update? Sync Carts now available

Applications (Apps) Are like programs on your computer You load each app (program) from iTunes Some apps are specific for iPod Touch, iPhone, and/or iPad Other apps exist for Android, Blackberry, etc. Cost ranges from free - $999 You get what you pay for (usually)

Slide 27

Things to Consider for AT What is the cost of the application? Can it be backed-up to a computer? Can it be used for multiple people? Does it require internet access? Wifi vs. Data plan (monthly charge) Is it accessible? Teamwork: Explore, Network, Learn, and Share what you know!

Slide 28

Things to Consider for AT Feature Matching for App Determine Student’s Need (SETT process) Determine appropriate technology DON’T find the app, then make it work for the student Ex: Proloquo2Go is NOT for everyone Try it out with student Rating scale Aligned with Curriculum, Evidence-Based, Ease of Use, etc.

Case Studies Your bldg admin asks you about a 6th gr student’s iPad. He is using it, with IEP team consent and understanding, for computer access due to limited physical ability. It is his personal equipment. Explain any issues of liability. What (types of) apps may help him complete written work? You work with a K student with Down syndrome. She uses about 5 vocalizations, 10 modified signs and points to 10-15 photos to request items. Her parents bought her an iPod Touch with Proloquo2Go over winter break and sent it to school with her. Determine issues with IEP team, “educationally necessary” and this parent’s decision. Explain concerns with feature-matching skills to apps.
