Welcome Aboard, Please take your seats My Name is Archie the Architect and you are my newest partners. and you are about to join me on a trip around the world for our first important job! This trip will take you to different countries to learn about and explore the different wonders of the world! As an architect, you are aware that not all buildings are the same and the wonders of the world each have something special about them. We know they were built a long time ago and have worn out over time. It is our duty to restore the wonders to their natural beauty adding a personal, modern touch to our recreation. As we explore each wonder in each country, please sit back, relax, and remember to enjoy the view! Take time to observe each wonder of the world and explore its shapes, sizes, forms, colours, patterns, etc. Hold on tight, we are about to take off! Bon Voyage! 4
Task Your task is to re-design one of the wonders of the world, adding your own ideas into the structure and making the wonder of the world your own. This is require observation, creativity and skill- Creating wonders of the world is a big job, so we need to create teams of 4. Good luck and happy drawing! 5
Process Meeting proceeds 10 A.M. STEP 1: PREPARATION FOR OUR TRIP: Archie’s company (the whole class) need to gather around and have a meeting - the first step is to explore and identify which wonders of the world are on our list for the tour. The World Wide Committee has hired your company to recreate the wonders of the Medieval World. At the meeting, the boss (teacher) will show photos of the Medieval Wonders and each architect is to share their ideas and comments about the different wonders of the world. Each team will be given a camera to use during your tour so each team member can take turns taking photos each step in your journey. 6
Process STEP TWO: FIRST STOP Australia Sydney, home to the marvelous Harbor Bridge and The Opera House! This first stop will give you an opportunity to view a wonder of the Modern World first hand as you can view these wonders up close and examine the shapes, patterns, materials, lines and colours used to create this modern wonder. You first job is to gather ideas about modern structures by exploring the Harbor Bridge and Opera House first hand. Be sure to draw representations and take photos for ideas! Share these drawings, pictures and ideas with your team at the end of this excursion. 7
Process STEP THREE: ALL ABOARD – Flight leaves home now! Your task now is to explore the different wonders of the medieval world and gather information about each wonder – Observe the colours of the structure, the shape of the structure, the patterns in the structure and the materials used in the structure. Using the information you have gathered, as a team, choose one wonder of the world you find most appealing and interesting. 8
Process STEP FOUR: RETURN FLIGHT HOME. Back to base, the boss will ask you about your trip and you will need to answer the following questions at the meeting: Which wonder of the world have you chosen to recreate? What was your favourite thing about this wonder of the world? Can I have one interesting fact about this wonder of the world? Which wonder of the world was your least favourite? Why? 9
Process STEP FIVE: GET MESSY! Architects work with a lot of materials and they need to know how to use them. Today you will explore different materials to help you choose what materials you will use for your wonder of the world. Feel the materials provided, squish them in your hand, bend them, snap them, smell them, look at them! As a team, choose which materials you like best! Gather the materials you most enjoyed working with and REMEMBER - Each team member needs to contribute to the collection of materials and gather at least one piece of material each. It is always best to collect more! MATERIALS ON DISPLAY: clay, play dough, wire, wooden blocks, paints, collage materials, natural materials and other found materials. 10
Process STEP SIX: SKETCH TIME! Time to get sketchy! Your next task is to brainstorm ideas with your team by drawing representations of your chosen wonder of the world. Designate one artist who will draw the ideas as each team member shares their interpretations and ideas. Your final sketch will need to be handed to Archie (the teacher) for the A-OK to start building! 11
Process STEP SEVEN: START BUILDING! The fun begins architects! You are now professional builders and it is your job to create your model using the materials you have collected! Remember to work as a team and spread the work between you (perhaps you can divide parts of the model to each team member) 12
Resources There will be a lot of exploration and experimentation for this project so use these pointers to help guide you in the right direction. Use the Library: The library is filled with endless books that can help you identify different wonders of the world and you can also find pictures in the library which illustrate what each wonder of the world looks like – very important for an architect to SEE the model before they recreate it. Internet : Consider the internet as your internet pet for this project. Your pet has gathered some very useful links which can be accessed by clicking on the flight tickets below. Excursions : Your first stop. Going on this excursion allows you to observe modern wonders of the world and observe the different aspects of this model. Make sure you take note of things such as how big it is, what shape it is, what patterns it has, what colour it is etc. (Make any comments you can about the physical appearance of a modern structure) Videos : Watch these videos to get a virtual tour of different wonders of the world. 13
Evaluation D DAY – The Big Day: Display your final model, sketches and any photos you have taken on your team table. Archie (the Teacher) will go around and each team will have an opportunity to “show and tell” their designs and models. This is the step where you can share your journey with others and talk about what you created, what you used, who did what, what your ideas were etc. Pictures of children’s artwork and models will be displayed around the room and each student can share their learning journey with their families. Teachers will also write comments made by the children around each project to demonstrate their learning and knowledge of what they have created and achieved. 14
Conclusion What a successful project! Each team was able to recreate a Medieval Wonder of the World and make it their own using different types of Media. The World Wide Committee are very happy with your designs and hope to build them in your country one day! Great job. Time to rest those creative hands but FIRST, give yourself a great big pat on the back! JOB WELL DONE FELLOW ARCHITECTS. The children were able to develop and enhance historical skills such as locating relevant information from various sources, identifying different points of view, developing their ability to communicate in a range of forms, etc. The children explored the world around them and the impact people have on the natural and man-made world. Creativity was explored using the visual representations, allowing children to further understand the basic elements of art and use this to create meaningful pieces of artwork. To further extend on this project, we could have a gallery opening for parents and families where children create an art show displaying their artwork and allowing families to view them along with some light beverages and snacks. Children could start creating invitations and planning the layout and itinerary for the art show. 15
