Mobile Technology How can iPads or smart phones help people with disabilities? Carrie Leonhart, M.S., CCC-SLP Augmentative Communication Services Coordinator Institute on Disabilities at Temple University Updated February 22, 2012
Pennsylvania’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research and Service
"For people without disabilities, technology makes things easier. For people with disabilities, technology makes things possible.” A program of the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University
Learning Objectives We canNOT learn: about every app available in-depth about apps for certain functional areas (e.g., communication, reading, math, navigation) enough for you to buy and use an iPad tomorrow with children
Learning Objectives We CAN learn: How and Why mobile technologies are used to support learning, therapy, and community integration? Examples and resources for: Built-in accessibility features Software applications (apps) to support: * Communication * Memory/Organization * Social Skills * Education * Functional Skills * More
Follow-Up Copy of Powerpoint & Resource Links www.CommunicatePA.wikispaces.com “Autism & Communication” page Note-Taking Ideas to Use/Share Name of Apps to Explore I have ?s About I’ll Share this Info With My Next Step Will Be Other Notes
Mobile Technologies Portable, generic, easily-available devices that may run programs or “apps” that can be used by professionals and our consumers Includes: “Smart” phones Tablets Music players (iPod Touch) Game systems (Nintendo DS)
Mobile Technologies Each product varies by: Hardware (device, manufacturer) iPad by Apple Galaxy Tablet by Samsung Mobile Operating System (platform – Windows vs Mac) Apple, Google, Microsoft, Blackberry, Palm, etc.
What’s the difference? Where you buy the device “iTech” = Apple iTunes (internet, program) Where you buy the apps - From the device itself Android = various manufacturers platform from Google Android Market
Android Accessibility varies by phone/tablet Most have text-to-speech, vision, and hearing support Swype keyboard set-up allows sliding between keys (without picking up finger) Android Market has fewer apps (for now) Beginning to see specialized apps for education and communication Alexicom AAC, TapToTalk, Tobii Sono Flex, Voice4U
What is Assistive Technology? DEVICES Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA – 34CFR§300.5) “Any item, piece of equipment, or product system” “Whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized” “That is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability”
Uses of Mobile Technologies For consumers, families, and/or professionals
Uses of Mobile Technologies Learning/Therapy Tool (Professional use) Use as therapy material Artic, phonology, language flashcards Social stories, video modeling Promote home practice or carry-over Use for Professional Data collection E-mail, documentation Assistive Technology (Family/student use) Use for communication AAC apps from low-tech (pic boards), to mid-tech (recordable buttons w/ pics), to high-tech (adv. language layouts w/ synthesized speech) Use for hearing, vision, fine motor, behavior, and MORE
Features to Consider for AT Portability Durability / Mounting Volume Battery Cost / Availability Lightweight! Not designed/tested for AT (See “Accessories”) Up to 10 hrs Relatively cheap and easy to purchase/repair
Features to Consider for AT Funding Most “Public” options (Medicaid, Private insurance, etc.) require that a device be “durable medical equipment” Currently excludes ALL mobile technology options Some success reimbursing apps as “dedicated software” Better luck with private funding, scholarships, PATF mini-grants, etc. So if it works as AT, how does student get one? School district policy? shared agreement with parents?

Case Study Example You work with a K student with Down syndrome. She uses about 5 vocalizations, 10 modified signs and points to 10-15 objects to request items. She doesn’t yet understand how to use photos or pictures to communicate. Her parents bought her an iPod Touch with Proloquo2Go over winter break and sent it to school with her. Any concerns with feature-matching skills to apps?
