One of my favorite sites for science is on the Kids Know It Network. This site is free and has many free links to choose from. They include: Biology, Astronomy, Dinosaur, Geology, Geography, History, Math, and Spelling. It includes Pre-K through 8th grade levels. I was amazed at the vast content. Another really cool link within KidsKnowIt Network is Miamiopia. This is a virtual world where the balloon people go to specific areas to learn. The problem is that free doesn’t mean free from advertisements. This is a major turn off and may be a problem with unsupervised students.
Within the science links, you can go to Kids Biology.com and another takes you to Kids Astronomy.com. Tons of information here, among other things, you can find out where the constellations are for the current month. For Geology and Geography you will be directed to GeoKids.com.
When you click on the teacher resource page it takes you to Teacher Vision which has a yearly fee. However, the content is such that the cost is well worth it.
Another science site that I found to be excellent is ipl2 For Kids. These are free sites as well. There are virtually hundreds of different sites within this site. The sources are safe and usually free from advertisements. There is a great resource page for teachers and parents. All in all it was great. I had a hard time leaving this site with its variety of activities. The negative is that the when you select computers and internet you may find sites that are too commercial. Another problem was that the activities seem to be better suited for older students (4th and up) and I couldn’t figure out how to determine age group or level before playing the game or going to the other sites.
