New Year
New Year and New Year’s Eve All Poles spend the New Year's Eve on different ways e.g. on balls, on private parties, on concerts. About midnight everyone greets the New Year throwing up toasts. Everyone is happy at this time!
Traditions and customs New Year's Eve balls and discos do not have long tradition in Poland. They belong to the XIX century and people organize them mostly in cities.
Tradition: Small bread and bread rolls Many New Year's Eve ceremonies were tied with feed. In country houses people baked bread and bread rolls called „bochniaczek” or „szczodrak”. It hand family members out on health and flourishing
Tradition: Pauper new-year This custom has behaved in regions like Żywiec, Koniaków and Gorlice. People disguised into colorful sort red and black devils, death, pauper and countrywoman, chimney-man, doctor and Jew walked from village to village, hooked passers-by and they tried to involve them for a common fun. They usually started "pauper new-year" walk from the New Year’s morning.
Tradition: Divination This divinations are connected with the weather and the future crops. People believe that when the first day of the New Year (January 1st) is frosty, their future harvests will be abundant. Because of divinations such proverbs emerged: " As new bright year and cool - whole fine year and fertile”, „When in January on court warm they will be in room - emptiness ".
