Inspire them. Tell them your own experiences in school when you were at their age. A lot of things may have changed during the years, but children will always find it amusing. One way or another, they will always find something common in your experiences with theirs and never hesitate in telling them your wrongdoings in school. Make them realize it is wrong. Just let them learn from your own mistakes. Though experience is said to be the best teacher, it is better that they would rather learn from your experiences. Guide them to avoiding those.

If your children get a bad mark in one of their subjects, or had a detention, if it is just possible, don't shout at them or curse at them. It is really painful in your childrens ear. Instead, try talking to them in a calm voice. Ask them what happened or what they did wrong. It is understanding that they are seeking as of the moment. Just make them realize things in a better light.

As a parent it is important that you get to understand what your child wants and how they feel in certain things because every child is different in a very unique way. You don't get to treat everyone the same way and get the very same response. The most important thing you can do to help your child excel in school is to really know them.
