How can you tell if your computer has a virus?

Slide 6

Simply take your computer to someone who really doesn’t know what’s wrong… (S)he will tell you It’s a virus!

Slide 7

Viruses It is pretty clear that when a computer doesn’t work the repair person will tell you it is a virus. Then they will reinstall the OS… and install a new anti-virus. The new OS probably fixed the problem. If you have any modern up-to-date anti-virus you are probably safe from them.

So how much should one pay? I don’t know about you but nothing works for me. I’ve tried several of the free ones, they all seem to work fine. When you buy… The provider must find a way to keep you paying… When its free… It’s well… FREE! (Not available for commercial use)

Slide 9

A true story I put a free anti-virus on a loved one’s computer. When, after a year, it asked her to re-register for the free version, she decided that the free one was so good that she would buy the $29.95 version. It locked up her computer and she had to call tech support. They offered to sell her a program to unfreeze and fix her computer for $59.95.

Slide 10

Don’t pay for free stuff… Give the money to the Hunger Taskforce* instead *my favorite charity.

Slide 11

Moral… There is a lot of free software out there. Give it a try but don’t buy it. Tell your friends about this free stuff. If you get to a position to buy for a school or group, buy their commercial version.

Windows 7 Addendum In September 2010 Microsoft released a program called “Security Essentials” as a free add on to Windows 7, XP and Vista. This program had been around in several forms since 2005 Microsoft Security Essentials' license agreement allows home users to download, install and use Microsoft Security Essentials on an unlimited number of their computers in their households free of any charges, so long as each computer has a genuine copy of Windows. Small businesses are also allowed to install this product on up to 10 devices. The software license agreement however, denies the use in academic institutions, enterprises and governmental locations. Microsoft Security Essentials checks for validity of the operating system during and after installation. If the operating system is not found to be genuine, Microsoft Security Essentials will notify the user of the issue, and may cease to operate after a period of time.

Slide 13

Security Essentials In one year MSE had over 30 million users, making it quite popular. If you buy a new pc with Windows, it may have this on it already and therefore, any other anti-virus is unnecessary and may lead to problems. Bad luck to people who make a living with Anti-virus software!
