Don’t Blink… Technology moves so quickly… How does one avoid missing the point…
A lot of smart people have missed the point…
Chester Carlson (1906-1968) Ever heard of “Carbon Paper?” It is because of Chester. He invented something called photocopying. He actually combined the techniques of electrostatic printing and photography. In 1938
1938!!!
Not Needed in Industry! IBM, RCA, GE, the US Army – Not interested! In 1948 one company, Haloid, was. Carlson received about $150,000,000 from his invention, donating more than 2/3 to United Negro College Fund and other civil rights and Buddhist organizations1
Haloid Changed Their Name To XeroX in 1961
Almost all laser printer and copiers today use Chester’s process…
The Wright Brothers… Could not get leading industrialists to accept their invention. The military thought it was a needless expense. If the lord meant us to fly…. Well, you know the rest.
Western Union The Telegraph Company
Had a chance to by Bell’s Patent for $100,000 but they considered it a toy!
Two years later it was worth over $25 Million
Didn’t Western Union Understand The Communications Business?
Why did Microsoft let Google get so big that it actually threatens their future?
Lessons For Educators Seek to understand new technologies. Don’t be afraid to try things. Use new technology that can make a difference now…
You May Be Old Enough? to remember school when there were no videos… No copiers… No computers or internet… Just paper and books and teachers…
It Worked! Most of us are products of those old schools…
So Why Make Changes?
Because we can do many things better with new technology…
Because we can do many things better with new technology… Not Just The Old things Faster….
So How Should YOU Use Technology In Your Work?
Research Will Never Be The Same….
The WEB is Not The Only Source… So much information… so poorly organized Hard to judge the quality of the information or who it came from Teachers need to know how the internet and web work so that they can more accurately supervise students using these online resources.
But… If your teachers send kids to do assignments with answers that can be Googled, they will be Googled. Are you or your teachers asking students to do something that for them is trivial? Google allows students to begin working with higher order thinking right away because most fact based research is trivial.
What to do… The students know how to find answers and information online. If the questions can be Googled, and most can, then students should be asked to compare, contrast and analyze. We treat the questions as trivia, the analysis as learning.
How can you use new technology? Glad you asked.
I’m not on facebook or myspace… but your students and their parents use social networking to make connections… You should too!
Our sophisticated, web based constituents are using the web for everything. You can take advantage of their Blackberry obsession!
You probably use email to communicate but I want to help you to take it up a notch!
Our Web Has Changed The web was originated as one-way communication. Commerce is actually two-way and that moved developers to make the web more interactive. This created tools for interactive web use that we can use.
Web 1.0 – Static Web 2.0 – Interactive Web 3.0 – Database Driven
Just How Have Things Changed? Information has made people more powerful Collaboration is not just a buzz word but is now the way people work Students and their parents know how to connect and do it daily People expect information to be available
Blogs are designed for one to many communication. You create content, others read it and marvel at your brilliance. Readers may comment but the content is yours.

Use A BLOG to Communicate… Students, and parents, expect to find information online that is up to date and easy to use and you can provide it. Without any help from tech support or a lot of training.
So… What’s a Blog? Really?
A blog (Web Log) – a website displayed in reverse chronological order. To Blog – a verb, meaning to add content to a blog. A Blogger – One who blogs
From Blogger2… In simple terms, a blog is a web site, where you write stuff on an ongoing basis. New stuff shows up at the top, so your readers can see what's new.
From Blogger4… Since Blogger was launched in 1999, blogs have reshaped the web, impacted politics, shaken up journalism, and enabled millions of people to have a voice and connect with others. BTW: BLOGS were invented after the current Wisconsin Instructional Literacy Standards were approved and put into effect. Most of the web is actually new concepts and ideas that were not in existence when the standards movement, which public schools live under, were developed and approved.
Blog Growth Has Been Explosive Started in 1998 as a single Web Log At the beginning of 1999 there were 23 blogs1 Today there are over 50 Million Blogs and some estimate that the number may double every 6 months.
Why?
Blogs are immediate, intimate, public, personal, informative and relevant. If they are not, we stop reading them. My favorites: My own children’s Blogs and Jazz Guitar blogs.
You read blogs you have an interest in and that have information you want.
You read blogs you have an interest in and that have information you want. NO OTHER REASON!
With a Blog: Post a reading list Show parents/students a rubric Provide a list of resources for teachers/parents. Show constituents a draft article, course proposal or outline Show the agenda for an upcoming meeting Be officious, preach
I Like Blogs: I need a place to put information for students that won’t change over time I want to say: You can find that on my blog BTW: This presentation is there: http://johnsklarsoffice.blogspot.com

It Compliments What You Do Now! Do you have a weekly email to your parents, or staff. Just send them the link to your blog once a week. Explain to them that you will be updating the blog every day, week or hour and after a while they will go there automatically.
Too Much Snow? Let the people know that school closings will appear on the blog and the other places you put it now. Your blog will get the message before the TV is warmed up. Parents will see it on their hand held device. Closing school because of snow? Just put it on the blog.
