How to Design Your Tattoo
Developing your own tattoo stencil is a creative and relatively easy way to ensure a unique and highly personal design. If you are confident in your artistic ability, you can design all aspects of your tattoo completely on your own however, if you are not the greatest artist but still want a great piece of art, you can trace an image from a book or computer print-out and continue on with the rest of the steps.
Draw or sketch your tattoo design on blank white paper, using a regular graphite pencil. No shading or coloring is necessary at this point; just concentrate on the broad outline.
Correct any mistakes with an eraser and make sure all the lines of your design are exactly how you want them before you move on to the next step.
Draw or sketch your tattoo design on blank white paper, using a regular graphite pencil. No shading or coloring is necessary at this point; just concentrate on the broad outline.
Trace over the pencil lines of your design with a thin, black marker and erase all the pencil lines once you have finished.
Copy the design onto the back of the paper with either a pencil first and then marker or just a marker. Once you have copied all the lines, you should have a perfect mirror image of your design.
Tape a piece of stencil paper over the reverse image of your design and place it back on the lighting desk or drawing surface.
Trace the reverse image onto the stencil paper with a tattoo stencil pencil. These pencils are extremely difficult to erase, so take your time, and you should start over on a fresh piece of paper if you make any mistakes.
Remove the tape and give the stencil to your tattoo artist for application.
