THE PROBLEM – LACK OF VISIBILITY Each year, thousands of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are killed on the roads and highways due to a collision with a truck or heavy goods vehicle. Out of every 100 accidents, 35 of these deaths are caused by “sideswipes” due to the fact the truck has a large blind spot, one large enough to lose total visibility of a family car.

For this reason, the European Comision adopted new legislation whereby it was made obligatory for all heavy goods vehicles within the EU to retrofit wide angle mirrors (or blind spot mirrors) in an attempt to combat this serious problem therefore reducing this type of accident. HOWEVER THE MAJORITY OF ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY SIDESWIPES OCCUR BETWEEN A TRUCK WITH A CICLIST, PEDESTRIAN OR ANOTHER VEHICLE WHEN THEY ARE TO THE SIDE AND TOWARDS THE FRONT OF THE CAB ( THE BLIND SPOT THAT THESE NEW MIRRORS DO NOT FULLY COVER)

THE SOLUTION : THE TRUCKVIEW FRESNEL LENS VOSA, and the Highways Agency in the United Kingdom invented and distributed 130,000 of these lenses to truck drivers and carried out extensive trials over a six month period in the South East of England. The results were unbelievable, a huge reduction of accidents by 59% Since the six month trials The Truckview Fresnel lens has become recognised as an important Visual aid, increasing immensly the drivers field of vision. There are now over 900.000 trucks in the UK alone using them.

WHAT IS A TRUCKVIEW FRESNEL LENS? Although TruckView is a visual device for drivers, it is not a mirror. It is a clear, thin, flat plastic lens that is press fitted to a truck’s passenger door window glass. Its concentric ring surface allows the driver to see through it directly, (so it’s not a reflected view) however its optical properties provide a downwards view close to and around the truck’s passenger door. TruckView therefore covers this mirror blind-spot which is the cause of so many accidents.

THE TEST.... A red car is unseen in the Blind Spot close to the truck’s passenger side door (as shown in the left hand picture) The car can only be spotted by using the TruckView lens (as affixed in the right hand picture). Truck driver Geoff Sales said: "What tends to happen is that they come on the inside of you and they get lost in the blind spot...Your side mirrors don't pick them up and your rear view mirrors don't pick them up."
