The main goal of the course is to produce a portfolio that will be part of your comprehensive exams. (Could also be part of your PI-34 process too.) The secondary goal is to complete for your proposal for a culminating project (CEdo599)

First, Angel I’m using Angel for as the base of the course. I like their interface and I think you will like it too. It was upgraded on January 3, 2011. There are several important links on the Announcement page. The lessons tab contains most course information. The calendar should contain due dates and class dates. Please let me know if you find things that are incorrect or not consistent.

Email, Blog and Team Forms Use my jmsklar@wolfmail.edu email address for all course communications. Use my john.sklar@gmail.com for emergency only. Use the blog and team forms to report what you are doing. The work is not complete without the form. Said another way: I will not count your blog post unless you fill out the form. Your team meeting will not count unless the team form is filled out. If you have not noticed, I love Google forms!

Second, the Syllabus (just the high points): Please take the time to read it. (If we don’t print it, I believe it will stay green! No that’s not mold.) Contact me by email at my wolfmail account only unless there is an emergency, or wolfmail is not working. (did I say that before?) Call me on my cell 262-227-3805 but not after 9 PM. (I’m usually at the gym for a couple of hours each morning.)

Objective 1 - Blogging You need to blog three times. You must comment, on two colleagues each blog session. I have tried to space them so you can blog and reply and then fill out the blog form so that I know you are done. You are not done with the assignment until you have filled out the form. This is listed as 10% of the grade. I believe that Angel’s gradebook does a good job of reducing the rubric points to percents and the course weighting.

Assessment 2.1 – The Portfolio Experience Be sure to look at the assignment sheets for detailed directions Part 1: Find some exemplars, look at them and glean from them some of the headers (topics) one might use to create their own portfolio. Part 2: Prepare an initial draft of your portfolio in Google Sites. Log into Wolfmail and use sites. Don’t use google sites use the wolfmail version. That will keep us all on the same page and private for now. (Make sure I can see them)

Slide 10

Wolfmail Tips: If you have both gmail and wolfmail accounts, most people do, log into one at a time. Wolfmail gets confused if you are in both and will make you confused too. They have improved this but it still can be confusing. If you are in Angel and can’t see some of the documents I have linked, log out of everything, log into Angel and Wolfmail, that will probably fix the issue. I like IE but Firefox works better with Wolfmail sites. Ever try Chrome?

Slide 11

Assessment 2.2 – Mission and Vision Be sure to look at the assignment sheets for detailed directions You may want to bounce these around with your team, colleagues etc. You will need to create pages or a page in your portfolio site to hold these, then add them to the site. As usual, let your instructor know when you are done with this.

Slide 12

Assessment 2.3 – Appropriate Standards You will identify a set of standards*, reflect on their value to you… (see the assignment sheet) Add the standards and related artifacts to you portfolio site. Reflect on other students. The due date is in the future but you should start everything at once so that none of it creeps up on you. *These are your standards, not mine. Find standards appropriate for your professional goals.

Slide 13

Assessment 2.4 – Artifacts from CED online As usual see the assignment sheet. In this section you will add to your portfolio a list of courses and appropriate artifacts. (These may overlap with the artifacts from 2.3. You should upload as many as possible to the sites document section to avoid dead links later. Linking is fine but may result in problems later. Access to google/wolfmail docs can be problematic so if you can upload, it might be best. You can also embed the docs in the site. Why don’t I upload my rubrics and assignments?

Slide 14

Assessment 2.5 – The Gimmie If you use wolfmail sites, and if you are polite and kind to the instructor… This will happen automatically as you create your site. Actually, it will happen even if you should act like a jerk. This might be a challenge if you were creating a site somewhere else. (but you can’t) It could be a challenge even here if your organization is poor. ( I won’t let that happen!)

Slide 15

Assessment 2.6 – The Portfolio If you have been keeping up all along this will just happen. You may want to tweak the order or design. I might prompt you to. We will be working on the portfolio site all along. This is the final draft that I will assess. Keep in mind that you will still have artifacts to accumulate from courses yet complete. Mark them “Under Construction” so that they are pages but not complete.

Slide 17

Assessment 3.1 – Portfolio Project Proposal We will discuss this more at a later date. Start thinking about what you might do. Please look at the assignment sheet and the rubric and keep in mind that I will be assessing the proposal but not the project. This is changed from previous iterations of this course so if you see anything that is confusing, it probably is, let me know please.

Slide 18

Good Things… We have a nice break, in the middle. You might need this time to accumulate artifacts and work on your site. All in all, the assignments overlap, i.e complete one and another is almost done. Working ahead with an eye on the objective will serve you well. Take the time to understand the assignments and you will be rewarded. You have a lot of stuff due right at the end so please don’t let it go ‘til the end.

Slide 19

Good Things (2)… I’ve taught this before and never lost anyone. If something doesn’t seem right, doesn’t work or if you think it could be reworded, reworked or otherwise changed, let me know right away. (I may not have thought of it.) Communicate with me and classmates. Keep in touch and ask questions, that way I will know if I am moving in the right direction.

Slide 20

Keep in mind… This class has little in the way of organized lectures. I will cover some content in class so don’t miss them Its mostly you compiling, sifting and sorting. With a bit of writing thrown in. When I ask for a paragraph or a narrative, please don’t short change me. A few sentences at a minimum. One is just plain not enough to count as a narrative. Get to work.

Slide 21

My Philosophy You are not done until you feel you have done your best. If you don’t like a grade or assessment, let me know and redo it. I will grade it again and give you the new grade, no penalty. If you can’t get something done by the due date let me know, before hand. If you let me know after the due date its late, if you let me know before the due date its delayed or work in progress, not late. If you don’t show up for a class you are absent. If you let me know in advance that something else is pressing on your life, I will work it out.

Slide 22

If you… Don’t communicate with me, you will probably have some problems. Blow off the beginning of the course, you will find the end a real bear. Don’t follow directions, my sympathy is fake. Don’t understand the directions and fail to ask, it is pretty much your problem. Have important things going on in your life, you are normal. You need to set aside time for this class.
