Utilizing a Wiki

Slide 2

Why a Wiki?? This is completely me – an old dog trying to learn new tricks. However I have recently learned about the beauty of wikis particularly in regard to online learning. We will utilize the wiki during this week’s assignment so this slideshow will walk you thru the steps you need to know.

Slide 3

When you open your Week Eleven Assignments you will see the link above. First, read through the directions (noting the due date for initial postings). Once you understand the requirements click on the underlined title “Prejudice in Advertisements.”

Slide 4

This will bring you to the Wiki Page I have created. You can see that I posted an example of an initial post. Let’s walk through the steps:

Slide 5

Creating an Initial Post Once you are ready to make your initial post simply click on “Create Wiki Page” located at the top of our Blackboard screen.

Slide 6

Creating an Initial Post Your screen will now look like this. Type in a name for your wiki and then upload your advertisement. To upload your advertisement picture you must save it on your computer first as a .jpeg or .gif file (most of the pictures are saved that way online). Next look for the icon of the photo second to the left (annotated above). Click there and follow the directions to upload your photo.

Slide 7

Creating an Initial Post If done correctly your screen should look like this – the name of your advertisement as well as the uploaded photo.

Slide 8

Creating an Initial Post Next type in your response (don’t forget to use your textbook!!!)

Slide 9

Creating an Initial Post Once you are satisfied with your posting then go to the bottom of the page and click “Submit”

Slide 10

Success!! If you see the green tab on the top of your screen you know you posted correctly. Also, Look at the right of your screen where the name of your advertisement shows up.

Slide 11

Responding to another student To respond to another student’s wiki go to the bottom of their post and click the “Comment” button on the right. You can read through other comments as well by clicking on the “Comment” button on the left – the number after it will show how many comments it has received. Right now it shows 0.

Slide 12

Responding to another student You can access the various wikis in order to respond by looking at the list under “Prejudice in Advertisements.” Currently it shows two, the one I posted as an example and the test advertisement we just completed. If you click on the name it will take you directly to the wiki. DO NOT click the pull down arrow on the right as you may accidently delete your posting or someone else's.

Slide 13

Let me know if you have any questions!
