Is Facit a Failure?

Slide 4

Within only a few years, the Swedish company Facit went from fantastic profits into being close to bankruptcy in the early 1970s.

Slide 8

The shift to electronics was the reason why Facit made those losses.

Slide 12

Facit’s CEO Gunnar Ericsson was now blamed for the problems at the company.

Slide 13

Should Facit be regarded as a failure?

Slide 14

My answer is NO.

Slide 15

There are three reasons for this:

Slide 16

1. All manufacturers of mechanical calculators got into trouble in this shift.

Slide 17

Monroe…

Slide 18

Victor…

Slide 19

Burroughs…

Slide 21

Remington Rand…

Slide 22

Olivetti…

Slide 24

Olympia…

Slide 25

Marchant…

Slide 26

2. Established firms in other industries have with few exceptions suffered greatly in technological shifts from mechanics to electronics.

Slide 27

Typewriters…

Slide 30

When watches became digital, about 1000 Swiss watch manufacturers went out of business in the 70s and 80s.

Slide 32

The music industry

Slide 33

The old radio industry

Slide 34

Kodak had to fire thousands and thousands of employees.

Slide 35

Many buildings in Rochester, NY, were blown into pieces.

Slide 36

In Munich, Germany, AgfaPhoto was demolished.

Slide 37

Konica left the industry after trying to survive through a merger with Minolta.

Slide 38

Polaroid is also resting in peace.

Slide 39

Hasselblad has been in deep trouble.

Slide 40

And so has Leica.

Slide 41

This can go on forever, I think the point is clear.

Slide 42

3. Once the calculator industry became digital, competition got fierce and ’the great calculator war’ broke out in the 1970s.

Slide 43

The calculators became cheaper, smaller and better at a violent pace...

Slide 47

New models were launched all the time…

Slide 51

In 1969-1972, more than 20 firms entered the industry…

Slide 58

Only a few years later, most of them had left the industry…

Slide 59

Only Sharp, Texas Instruments, Casio and a few others eventually survived…

Slide 64

Thus, if Facit would have survived the shift to electronics, it wasn’t exactly paradise that waited after the revolution...

Slide 67

Summing it up:

Slide 68

Facit can’t be regarded as a failure. All other mechanical calculator companies went down, and the same thing has happened in virtually every industry that has been digitized. Moreover, once the shift happened, competition became so fierce that many electronic companies had to leave the industry.
