Apostrophes

Slide 6

Apostrophes An apostrophe (‘) is used to show possession and to form contractions.

Slide 7

Rule 1. Use an apostrophe to show that something belongs to someone. If the thing belongs to one person, use ’s after the noun that refers to the person, even if the noun already ends in –s. Jessica’s nose ring is the topic of conversation in class. Her friend’s ear stud, however, does not generate much interest. Classmates do not even know about Elvis’s belly button ring.

Slide 8

Rule 2. If the thing belongs to more than one person and the noun that refers to these persons ends in –s, use only an apostrophe after the –s. All of the students’ conversation is about Jessica. Her friends’ body piercings never come up. The professors’ reaction was especially interesting. If the noun doesn’t end in –s, use ’s after it. The men’s faces were painted with white streaks. The women’s hair was braided with vines and flowers.

Slide 9

Rule 3. Do not use an apostrophe in the plural form of a name unless the word is also showing possession. In that case, use an apostrophe after the –s of the plural. We always enjoyed seeing the Kennedys. The Kennedys’ house always seemed warm and welcoming.

Slide 10

Rule 4. Do not use an apostrophe in possessive forms of pronouns: yours, his, hers, its, ours, or theirs. The car was missing one of its rear hubcaps. Because our car was being repaired, our friends let us use theirs.

Rule 5. Use an apostrophe to form a contraction. A contraction is formed by combining two words into one and omitting one or more letters, with an apostrophe taking the place of the omitted letter or letters. Some college instructors prefer that you not use contractions in college writing. It’s [it is] always fun to go hunting. I don’t [do not] care if others think that my father and I shouldn’t [should not] hunt. We’ve [we have] always enjoyed it and wouldn’t [would not] stop for anything.

The Mitchells arent going to the restaurant tomorrow because they cant get a reservation for that night. Because its breezy today, Ive decided to show you how to fly your new kite.

Quotation Marks

Slide 44

Quotation Marks Quotation marks (“”) are used to enclose the exact words of a speaker or writer and the titles of essays, articles, poems, songs, and other short works.

Slide 45

Rule 1. Use quotation marks to set off a speaker’s or a writer’s exact words. “I can’t believe I said that!” Joshua exclaimed. “I don’t know what you were thinking,” I replied, “when you said that.” According to my textbook author, “We often say things we don’t mean when we’re stressed.”

Slide 46

Quotation Marks As these examples show, a period or a comma always goes before closing quotation marks. A question mark or an exclamation mark, on the other hand, sometimes goes before the quotation marks and sometimes after them. It goes before the quotation marks if the quotation itself is a question or an exclamation, as in the first example. It goes after the quotation marks if your sentence is a question or an exclamation but the quotation itself isn’t, as in the following example: When did people begin to say “Have a nice day”?

Slide 47

Quotation Marks Do not use quotation marks around an indirect quotation, one that doesn’t use the speaker’s or writer’s exact words. An indirect quotation is usually introduced with that. Henry said that he had always wanted to study medicine.

Slide 48

Activity 17: Use Quotation Marks to Show Exact Words How was the play? my professor asked the class. The doctor said that I should get more exercise. I’ll take popcorn and a soda, I said to the clerk. My aunt always says, A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Guess what? she said. I’m pregnant.

Rule 2. Use quotation marks to enclose the titles of articles, essays, book chapters, speeches, poems, short stories, and songs. I especially enjoy the newspaper column “Our Views.” My last essay was entitled “Dia de los Muertos.” Emily Dickinson wrote the poem “I Dwell in Possibilities.” Sandra Cisneros wrote my favorite short story: “House on Mango Street.” When we go caroling, we always sing “Deck the Halls.”

I bought People magazine to read the article Jen and Ben Break Up. Edgar Alan Poe’s poem The Raven is usually assigned in American literature courses.
