Streams of culture „THE CELEBRATION OF CARNIVAL“ ITALY
type of the celebration and the reason for choosing ONE Istituto Comprensivo Castel Frentano (Ch) Italiy Carnival is a festival with a lot of colour and it is fun. There are masks and beautiful dresses. This festival takes place between February and March. The carnival lasts several weeks and ends on Shrove Tuesday: this is most important day because there are principal celebrations before Lent, the period beginning with Ash Wednesday. We chose to talk about the Carnival because in Italy it’s lived with enthusiasm, especially by children and teenagers. You can make jokes while many younger children are throwing confetti. At Carnival time you can say: “Anything goes at Carnival”
the characteristic of CARNIVAL Istituto Comprensivo Castel Frentano (Ch) Italiy In smaller towns, the preparations for the Carnival begin in middle January. The people build paper mache puppets and prepare the floats (allegorical wagon). During the Carnival everything is allowed: cheerfulness, fancy- dress , food and all kinds of cakes. In all regions of Italy is celebrated with parades and dances, traditional and fantastic masks, confetti and streamers. In some cities the celebrations are so original that they are touristic attraction.
Istituto Comprensivo Castel Frentano (Ch) Italiy origin The term “ Carnevale” comes from the latin Carnem levare. From the Middle Age it means that people must abstain themselves from eating meat for all the Lent (from the day following the end of the carnival – Ash Wednesday - until “Holy Thursday“) before Easter.
Istituto Comprensivo Castel Frentano (Ch) Italiy origin The first documents of Carnival date back to Medieval times (since the eighth century approx.) and talk about a festival with an immoderate use of foods and beverages. Therefore Tuesday and Thursday before Ash were called "fat“ (Shrove Thrusday). Moreover, at that time, people were exchanging social roles, hiding the old identities behind masks. Thus the practice of wearing a mask was born. The celebrations culminated with the trial, condemnation, death and funeral of a paper mache puppet, that was nothing but the old year who died and took away all the bad things.
