Slide 40

The Devil Evil is like darkness because just as darkness is the lack of light evil is the lack of good. It is not a thing it’s just the lack of a thing,

Slide 41

The Devil In the Old Testament the force of evil is first found as the serpent who tempted Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. It was the serpent who introduced sin into the world.

Slide 42

The Devil Later in the Old Testament Satan is referred to as an Angel of God who fell from God’s favour after becoming too self-obsessed.

Slide 43

The Devil The original idea of Satan seems to be of a testing angel. In the book of Job Satan tests Job to determine whether his faith is strong. Exam 1.--------- 2.-------

Slide 44

The Devil Jesus is tempted by Satan after being in the wilderness for forty days and nights. In each case he resists temptation.

Slide 45

The Devil In the last book of the Bible, Revelation, an account of the rise of the kingdom of heaven is told. This includes the fall of Satan who is described as an evil force, the great deceiver. Satan is eventually destroyed by being thrown into the lake of fire (Hell)

Slide 46

The Devil Christians don’t all agree about what Satan is they think he could be one of the following… A symbolic figure who does not exist but who represents all of the evil in the world. A fallen Angel who has angelic followers called Demons. They fight against God and try to destroy humankind.

Slide 47

The Devil Exam 1.--------- 2.------- “There can’t be a God because the world is full of evil?” Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer and show you have thought about different points of view. You must refer to Christianity.

Slide 57

What do people believe about Life after Death?

Slide 58

Why do people believe in life after Death? Learning Objectives… Be able to explain at least four reasons why someone might believe in life after death. Be able to justify your own point of view.

Slide 59

What is the soul?

Slide 60

Plato said that the soul is like the rider of a chariot. The horses represent your body and your mind. After death your soul lives on. This is called dualism.

Slide 61

Draw the diagram and fill it in for you…

Slide 62

Aristotle said that the soul and the body were linked and you could not have one without the other. The body is the material of a thing and the soul is it’s function. He used the examples of an Axe or an eye.

Slide 63

Why do people believe in life after Death? They believe the soul lasts forever and doesn’t need a body They believe that there needs to be justice in an unfair world They believe that God loves everything he has made They are frightened of not existing They miss their loved ones So What!!?

Slide 64

In your books.. Explain the chariot idea of the soul. Explain the Axe idea. Some people believe in life after death because… they believe the soul lasts forever and doesn’t need a body, so they believe that there needs to be justice in an unfair world so they believe that God loves everything he has made so they are frightened of not existing so they miss their loved ones so ---- ------- ----- so What do you believe? Why?

Slide 65

Islam and death Islam teaches that Allah (God) has full control over all that happens. Nothing can happen unless permitted by Allah. Nor can a soul die except by Allah’s leave. The term being fixed as by writing. Surah 3:145. However, Allah has also given humans free will; people are able to choose between right and wrong, and are responsible for their actions. This life is a preparation for the eternal life to come (Akhirah). Humans have one life and it is up to them how they choose to live it. The final day Muslims (followers of Islam) believe that on a day decided by Allah, and known only to Allah, life on earth will come to an end and Allah will destroy everything. On this day all the people who have ever lived will be raised from the dead and will face judgement by Allah. Muslims believe that they will remain in their graves until this day. This day is called by several names: the Day of Resurrection (yawm al-Qiyamah) the Day of Judgement (yawm ad-din) the Last Hour (as-sa’a)

Slide 66

On this day all the people who have ever lived will be raised from the dead and will face judgement by Allah. Muslims believe that they will remain in their graves until this day. This day is called the Day of Judgement or the Last Hour Allah will balance the good deeds a person has done in their life against the bad deeds. And to every soul will be paid in full (the fruit) of its deeds; and Allah knoweth best all that they do. Surah 39:70 If the good deeds outweigh the bad, the person will go to paradise (Jannah), a place of joy and bliss. Of the good that they do nothing will be rejected of them; for Allah knoweth well those that do right. Surah 3:115 If the bad things outweigh the good, then the person will be punished in hell (Jahannam). When Allah is making a judgement, even a person’s intentions (niyyah) are taken into account. Those who reject faith – neither t heir possessions nor their (numerous) progeny will avail them aught against Allah: they will be companions of the fire, dwelling therein for ever. Surah 3:116

Slide 67

The Last Day (The day of Judgement) Some Christians believe that one day Jesus will return to earth. The dead will all stand before God in Judgement. Those who have accepted Jesus as their saviour will go to heaven. The rest?

Slide 68

Heaven Christians have different views about heaven. Some say, “God loves us so everyone will go to heaven”

Slide 69

Slide 71

Hell Hell is a place of everlasting suffering. Some Christians believe that all who haven’t accepted Jesus will burn there for eternity. Others might believe that a loving God could never send someone to such a place.

Slide 72

Purgatory Roman Catholics believe in a middle place between Heaven and Hell called Purgatory. In purgatory you pay for your sins. This means that Roman Catholics will sometimes pray for dead people to help them to get into heaven.

Slide 73

Annihilation Some Christians think that if you die without turning to Christ you are simply destroyed. They think this is more loving than being sent to Hell.

Slide 86

It is the year 3000AD. The Society for Galactic Interspecies Relationships has determined that we need to define criteria in order to establish whether a species is enough like a human to be given rights. Your task is to define the characteristics of a person, in order to judge a creature’s rights. Any planet whose inhabitants do not meet these criteria will be fair game for mining and colonisation.

The Offences Against The Person Act 1861 In 1861 Parliament passed the Offences Against The Person Act. Section 58 of the Act made abortion a criminal offence, punishable by imprisonment from three years to life even when performed for medical reasons. No further legal changes occurred in England until 1929.

Slide 102

The Infant Life Preservation Act 1929 In 1929 the Infant Life Preservation Act amended the law stating it would no longer be regarded as a felony if abortion was carried out for the sole purpose of preserving the life of the mother. The Act made it illegal to kill a child ‘capable of being born live’

Slide 103

The Infant Life Preservation Act 1929 28 weeks was set as the age at which a foetus must be presumed to be viable. A doctor was allowed to perform an abortion legally if he/she was ‘satisfied that the continuance of the pregnancy was liable to endanger the health of the expectant mother’.

Slide 104

The Bourne Case 1938 In 1938 a young woman was raped by a group of soldiers and became pregnant. Dr Alec Bourne agreed to perform an abortion for her and was subsequently prosecuted. Bourne argued that it was necessary to perform the abortion to preserve the mental health of the young woman. The doctor was not convicted. This case set a legal precedent for performing an abortion to preserve a woman’s mental health.

Slide 105

History of the 1967 Abortion Act After the Bourne ruling some women had abortions with the consent of a psychiatrist, to protect their mental health. Wealthier women were more likely to be able to pay to see a psychiatrist who could agree to a safe abortion, but many would have had no option but to seek illegal methods for ending a pregnancy.

Slide 106

History of the 1967 Abortion Act The cost to women’s health of illegal abortion was high with around 40 women dying each year and many more injured. Doctors, politicians and members of some religious communities worked together to pass a law that allowed for abortion in some circumstances.

Slide 107

History of the 1967 Abortion Act The Abortion Act was passed in 1967 is sometimes seen as one of the triumphs of the women’s movement. However, it was not passed to give women rights, but to respond to a public health problem. The law gave the rights and responsibility for decision making to doctors not women. It did not legalise abortion, but allowed for exceptions to the illegality of abortion.

Slide 108

The Abortion Act 1967 An abortion may be performed legally if two or more doctors certify that there is risk to: the life of the mother; the mental or physical health of the mother; the physical or mental health of existing children; Or the baby is seriously mentally or physically handicapped.

Slide 109

1990 and Beyond In 1990 the 1967 Act was amended by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act, which reduced the original time limit of 28 weeks to 24 weeks Beyond 24 weeks an abortion is only legal if there is a serious risk to the health of the mother or if the baby is seriously disabled.

Slide 110

1990 and Beyond Recent debate about the Abortion Act has centred on two possible changes to current legislation: The removal of the need for a woman to seek permission from two doctors to have an abortion – in order to prevent unnecessary delays for women seeking abortion under 12 weeks. Further reduction in the upper time limit on abortion.

Slide 111

Abortion

Slide 112

Abortion Church Teachings In 1140 church law decided that “abortion is murder only when a foetus is formed.” The foetus was believed to be fully formed at 80 days, when the soul entered it.

Slide 113

Abortion In 1869 Pope Pius IX declared that the foetus became “ensouled” at conception and, therefore, all abortions were murder. In 1917 the new Code of Canon Law declared that for Roman Catholics abortion was a sin at any stage in the pregnancy.

Slide 114

The Roman Catholic Church are against Abortion they believe that life begins when the sperm meets the egg. In 1930 the Catholic Church decided that abortion was not a sin if it was carried out on a woman suffering from cancer of the womb or an ectopic pregnancy. This was because in both cases, both the foetus and the mother would die if the abortion was not carried out.

Slide 115

“The Anglican view on abortion is that although the foetus is to be specially respected and protected, nonetheless, the life of the foetus is not absolutely sacrosanct if it endangers the life of its mother.”(Church of England report, 1984) “Circumstances which may justify an abortion are direct threats to the life or health of the mother, or the probable birth of a severely abnormal child.”(Methodist Statement, 1980)

Slide 116

No Christian denomination will bury stillborn or miscarried foetuses.

Slide 117

Islamic teaching on abortion (from bbc bitesize) Abortion is not permitted within Islam unless it’s to save the mother’s life. Even if a pregnant woman is sentenced to death, this cannot be carried out until the baby has been born. The later the abortion takes place the worse it is thought to be. Some Muslims believe that for the first four months of pregnancy the woman has greater rights than the foetus but that after this time they are equal. One of the reasons that Islam is very opposed to abortion is because, before the time of Muhammadpbuh, unwanted female children were often buried alive in Arabia. Islam teaches: Do not destroy your offspring for fear of poverty, it is We Who provide for them and for you. Surely, destroying them is a great sin. Surah 17:32

Slide 119

Loving thing (Quakers etc.) What if the child will suffer. (or the parent?) For Roman Catholics, sperm and egg = life Does the mother’s life come first? It’s murder and murder is one of the commandments. Body = temple of the Holy Spirit Children are a gift from God. The Rev JJ campaigned about abortions for babies with something as minor as a cleft pallette.

Slide 121

Euthanasia Lesson Objectives. By the end of the lesson you will… Know what euthanasia is (F-G Grade) Explain the difference between active and passive euthanasia (C grade) Be able to give your opinion about euthanasia (D grade) Explain other opinions about euthanasia (C grade) Explain Christian and Muslim responses to euthanasia (B+ grade)

Slide 122

Euthanasia Turning off a life support machine that is keeping a person alive. Putting a pillow over a mental patient's head. Stopping doctors from resuscitating a baby (bringing it back to life after it has died). Allowing a brain-dead person to starve to death. Giving a patient enough morphine to kill them. Drowning an unwanted baby. Not feeding a baby because it is handicapped. Not putting someone on a drip when they loose consciousness after starving themselves. Giving someone a jar of paracetamol knowing that they want to kill themselves. Killing an elderly person because you want their money in the will. Allowing a person in a car crash to bleed to death because the car is likely to explode at any moment.

Slide 123

Euthanasia Euthanasia is a word derived from the Greek language. It means, ‘a good death’. If a person believes in euthanasia, it means that they are in favour of allowing people the right to commit suicide, or be killed by others, usually when a person has an incurable or excruciatingly painful medical condition. There are two kinds of euthanasia:

Slide 124

Euthanasia i) Passive Euthanasia Allowing people who are being kept alive artificially to die. (ie. by switching off a life support machine). In affect they die from their illness or injury.

Slide 125

Euthanasia ii) Active Euthanasia Killing someone to end suffering, commiting suicide, or assisting someone to commit suicide. This might be a lethal injection, or overdose.

Slide 126

Euthanasia In Britain, passive euthanasia is legal. This was established in the High Court when an action by a pressure group against withdrawing treatment from brain-dead Hillsborough victim Tony Bland was thrown out of court. Doctors can decide to switch off life support machines after consulting with relatives. In Britain, active euthanasia remains illegal. To kill yourself is suicide, this is illegal regardless of motive. It is legal in Holland.

Slide 127

Euthanasia a person’s body is their own, therefore they should have the right to do with it as they wish. One of the main aims to life is happiness. If illness and disease mean that there is no happiness, then the point to life is missing and a person may be justified in taking their life. in many cases euthanasia is a blessing to relatives allowing them to mourn the loss of their loved one, without having to see them suffer. to assist someone to die is not an act of violence but an act of love.

Slide 128

LO Be able to give your opinion about euthanasia (D grade) Explain other opinions about euthanasia (C grade) Explain Christian and Muslim responses to euthanasia (B+ grade) Anne Turner a retired doctor who has an illness that she will die from slowly and painfully. She has travelled to Switzerland to end her life because euthanasia is legal there.

Slide 129

Euthanasia in some cases there may be a chance of recovery. A cure might be discovered. the feelings of family and friends may be upset by a ‘selfish’ decision. if we allow euthanasia because someone has no quality of life, doctors may allow relatives to kill old people on the grounds that they are unhappy life is a gift, maybe even a gift from God. No matter how bad the pain is, we must hold on to life at all costs. No one has the right to ‘play God’.

Slide 130

Slide 131

What do Christians think about Euthanasia? Starter: Put the cards in groups that you think fit together then write down their numbers. Explain why you have grouped them like this. Eg. 1,2,3 because they are all Christian beliefs 3,6,9 because the are all against killing LO Be able to give your opinion about euthanasia (D grade) Explain other opinions about euthanasia (C grade) Explain Christian and Muslim responses to euthanasia (B+ grade)

Slide 132

Why are Christians often opposed to euthanasia? Most Christians are opposed to euthanasia. Some Christians accept that passive euthanasia is acceptable under certain conditions. A few Christians will accept active euthanasia on the grounds of compassion and love.

Slide 133

Why are Christians often opposed to euthanasia? 1. Human life is a gift from God, only God can take it away. The timing of death should be left to God.

Slide 134

Why are Christians often opposed to euthanasia? 3. In the Bible (1 Corinthians 3:16) St Paul says that the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. This means that the body is holy and should not be destroyed for any reason.

Slide 135

Why are Christians often opposed to euthanasia? 5. Christians believe in life after death. Because of this they do not accept that ending life prematurely is reasonable. Suffering may be serving some purpose.

Slide 136

Why are Christians often opposed to euthanasia? 7. Most Christians are convinced of the importance of the final stages of life for the dying person and family alike. The Hospice Movement seeks to provide a peaceful and comfortable environment for people to die in.

Slide 137

Why are Christians often opposed to euthanasia? 9. But, the overriding belief of Christians (following the example of Jesus) could be that an attitude of selfless love towards others is their prime duty. Many Christians will feel compassion for the terminally ill, and support their efforts in trying to achieve a ‘happier death’.

Slide 138

11. Roman Catholics are opposed to all forms of euthanasia. They believe very strongly in the sanctity of life.

Slide 139

Why are Muslims often opposed to euthanasia? 2.Muslims must live as if every day may be their last. Every life has an allotted time set by Allah. When they die they will face Allah and answer for all the things they have done.

Slide 140

Why are Muslims often opposed to euthanasia? 4.Muslims believe that all human life is a gift from Allah, and is therefore sacred. Once a life has been given, no human has the right to end it.

Slide 141

Why are Muslims often opposed to euthanasia? 6.Muslims believe very strongly in God driven fate. There is nothing they could do to prevent the will of Allah. If someone is suffering it is for a reason, only Allah knows the reason.

Slide 142

Why are Muslims often opposed to euthanasia? 8.Muslims reject the idea of euthanasia, they regard each soul as being perfect, even if the body that the soul is in is not perfect. Everything will be revealed on the day of judgement. Muslims are urged to trust in Allah and to bear suffering rather than seek a quick release through suicide or euthanasia.

Slide 143

Why are Muslims often opposed to euthanasia? 10.‘When your time expires, you will not be able to delay the reckoning for a single hour, just as you cannot bring it forward by a single hour.’ (surah 16:61) ‘The knowledge of the final hour is with Allah; none but he can reveal when it will occur...All of a sudden it will come to you.’ (surah 7:187)

Slide 144

Why are Muslims often opposed to euthanasia? 12.‘Allah fixes the time span for all things... It is he who causes people to die and be born.’ (surah 17:33)

Slide 156

b) Explain how Christian might respond to questions about divorce. Candidate 6 Not all Christians think the same thing about divorce. The Chrurch of England allowed divorce from the time of Henry the 8th. Some Christians, such as Roman Catholics, believe that divorce is wrong in all circumstances. They think this because they believe that God has joined them and no one can separate them. They call this the sanctity of marriage. The couple promised to love each us until death so they shouldn’t break their promise. Sometimes Roman Catholics can have their marriage annulled this means that the Church say that it was never a marriage in the first place. In cases of Domestic violence Christians often accept that separation is necessary and sometime that could mean a divorce. Other Christians, such as Quakers, think that although marriage is special and blessed by God sometimes people make mistakes. They will allow divorce and remarriage. Christians often work for groups like RELATE or ACCORD who try to overcome difficulties in marriage.

Other Christians believe that sex is not just for having babies it is also for joining a couple together in love so…. They still might not allow … because…

Slide 181

What do Christians believe about contraception? [8] Not all Christians think the same thing about contraception. Roman Catholics say that sex is only for having babies, so any method of contraception which does not allow the possibility of conception is not allowed. They do allow the rhythm method because this allows the possibility of conception. Other Christians say that sex is also to bring a man and wife closer together so contraception is allowed provided it doesn’t harm a developing foetus, like the morning after pill.

Slide 182

Muslim view on contraception. thanks to http://hepq.pbworks.com/f/Relationships+booklet+1.pdf Most Muslims think that it is fine for married couples to use contraception to plan heir families and ensure that all members of the family are healthy and wanted. They state that Muhammad never said contraception was wrong, so there is no problem using it. However, some Muslims do not think contraception should be allowed, as only Allah should be allowed to decide when new life begins and humans have no right to interfere with his plans.

Slide 195

Many people also think that the Christian Church is sexist and does not treat men and women equally. Paul said that: Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. If they want to enquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. 1 Corinthians 14:34-35

Slide 196

Now I want you to realise that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonours his head. And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonours her head-it is just as though her head were shaved. If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. 1 Corinthians 11:3-7 . He sees the roles of men and women as very different.

What does the Qur’an say about dress? Women are to cover their hair because it drives men wild with desire. Women are expected to cover their bare limbs Men are to dress modestly, not showing their bare stomach, arms and legs.

Slide 219

What does the Qur’an say about the roles of men and women? Equality All people are equal … as the teeth in a comb. No Arab, can claim merit over a non-Arab, nor a white over a black person, nor a male over a female. We shall reward the steadfast according to their noblest deeds. Be they men or women, those who embrace the faith and do what is right, we will surely grant a happy life. The search for knowledge is a duty for every Musliom, male or female. Men shall have authority over women because Allah has made the one superior to the other and because they spend their wealth to maintain them Women shall, with justice, have rights similar to those exercised against them, although men have a status above women.

Slide 220

What do women say about this? I don’t mind wearing the hirjab. It doesn’t matter what I’m wearing underneath and we all have bad hair days. I’m at university and I feel protected by this because, when I have discussion with male students, I know they’re listening to me and respecting my opinion, not trying to weigh me up. I don’t feel threatened. I am wearing other clothes underneath, and no-one knows. I only wear my traditional clothes when it is an important family gathering. Otherwise, I wear a smart the same as everyone else. I don’t cover my hair. I don’t wear tops if they are deeply cut, or wear very short mini skirts on the street – that is keeping to the Qur'an by dressing modestly.
