Who is Authorized to Install Video Surveillance? Cont’d Video surveillance systems come in a number of varieties – ranging from simple home security tools to complex retail store monitoring. Whatever the size of the project or the breadth of the application, we have the skills and knowledge to get it done. Depending on the location – a home, office, school, or other public location – video monitoring has to follow some specific rules. Once we’ve established that you either are or are representing someone who can authorize installation and the administration of the system, we can start to talk about what type of security system you need, and what rules you need to follow.

Notification For all non-home locations, notification is one of the biggest regulations regarding video surveillance. You see the signs so often you may not even notice – on public buses, in convenience stores, and as you walk into retailers, banks, and grocery stores. This is different for cameras placed outside a home – if someone is trespassing, there is no assumption of privacy. Covert monitoring inside the home may be an indication of much larger problems – it doesn’t violate the law, but family members may not appreciate being watched all the time. At public schools, parents must be notified that the children are being watched, and how, but the children themselves may not be aware of it.

System Types The majority of surveillance systems operate on what is called closed circuit television. CCTV security systems use a number of cameras in different locations and are tied back to a central security room. The different video feeds are linked through a recording device then displayed. The television standard security room filled with TVs, complete with dozing security guard, is a representation of this type of system. It’s perfect for small-scale security, as they are easy to install and configure. Elaborate CCTV systems can be found in large retail stores as well. The largest drawback is that if the security room is compromised, recordings can be easily destroyed. Second, the system is nearly impossible to monitor from off-site.

System Types Cont’d Network-enabled video surveillance is incredibly flexible. Connecting cameras to an internal business network means they can be viewed by any computer with the proper login credentials – even one that isn’t on-site. If the login information is easily guessed, then you have a problem. If you want to be able to check in on things while you’re gone, though, this can be an incredible system to have. Some smart phones are even capable of viewing live footage. You can check in on your home, office, or workplace while on the go.
