Motanka is a Ukrainian folk doll. She symbolizes female wisdom; She guards the home and the hearth; She is a great talisman against bad spirits and bad moods; She wards away the evil eye.
Motanka is made by winding and tying cloth and thread. Scissors & needles may not be used when making a motanka She is never sewn
Motanka’s face is often left blank. Her face may never be painted, as it used to be thought that “bad spirits could enter The soul Through the eyes
Frequently, a cross was placed Over the face – The solar symbol The cross over the chest Guards the heart Against bad feelings and thoughts.
Old clothing are used to make Motankas. Those used clothing carry The energy of the one who wore them And the love and the warmth Of the maker’s hands.
