Biography The Abbagnale brothers were Italian rowers. They are Agostino, Carmine and Giuseppe. They were among the most famous Italian athletes during the 80s thanks to their many victories in national and international competitions. Carmine Abbagnale Carmine  was born on January 5, 1962 in Castellammare di Stabia. He started canoeing with his eldest brother Giuseppe and he was trained by his uncle at Canottieri Stabia. He received a gold medal in coxed pairs, with Giuseppe di Capua and his brother Giuseppe, in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and again in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.

Agostino Abbagnale Agostino Abbagnale was born on 25 August 1966 in Pompei. He is the youngest brother. Agostino won his first gold medal in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul while his brothers were winning another Olympic medal. After this victory, he stopped his activity for five years because of a form of thrombosis. In 1995 he returned to racing: in 1997 and 1998 he won two gold medals at the world championships. In the 2000 Summer Olympics, he repeated his gold medal performance winning the Quadruple Scull.

Giuseppe Abbagnale Giuseppe Abbagnale was born on July 24, 1959 in Castellammare di Stabia. He received a gold medal in coxed pairs, with Giuseppe di Capua and his younger brother Carmine, in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and again in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. The crew won the silver medal in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona behind another couple of brothers, Greg and  Jonny Searle.

Curiosity Carmine and Giuseppe always competed as a couple and Agostino, the youngest of the three brothers, never joined them . In 1992 a film was made about their career, entitled “Una storia italiana”. (An Italian story) They all were awarded with “Official Order of Merit of the Italian Republic”. They also became famous thanks to the excited commentary of the famous sport journalist Giampiero Galeazzi, who commented their legendary victory in 1988 at Olympic Games in Seoul.
