The only thing that I really knew about the LDS is that the headquarters was in Salt Lake City. You did a great job at giving us much more information than that! I did, however, believe that they were polygamists. I'm glad you cleared that up! I really liked that you added the music behind the Hill Cumorah Pageant slide! Good job!

I did not really know anything about Mormons but from this presentation, I have learned a lot! This is all very interesting. I have always heard that Mormons have lots of children. I also have always heard that some Mormons are polygamists which is not true. Great slideshow! -Shantay Hagen

Brittany Pamer: I am embarassed to say that I wasn't aware of the Morman belief that there is no three in one, but three separate beings. Interesting topic.

Great job Caitlin! You had a lot of great information in your presentation. I did not realize that I knew so little about the LDS religion. I agree with you that this co-culture is well-integrated and here to stay! Rebecca Hannah

Jessica Eberhard: It was interesting to hear that they discourage polygamy. I had never heard of the Hill Cumorah. The show sister-wives doesn't really portray this religion very well, so it was nice to hear facts about them.

LDS Integration in American Society Early in their history, there were clashes between Mormons and non-Mormons The Utah War, 1857-1858 (Poll, n.d, and Ramos, 2006) Today members are well integrated in U.S culture Distinctions exist due to prohibited practices Do not isolate themselves Hold or have held positions of authority on local, state, & national levels

Slide 16

LDS Portrayed in the Media Media has represented Mormons in various ways- not all of them strictly accurate “A Study in Scarlet”- Sherlock Holmes story (Doyle, 2003) Big Love – TV show on HBO (Olsen & Scheffer, 2006) “Bad press” associated with Mormons due to child abuse cases connected with polygamists Warren Jeffs case (Folmer & Kindelan, 2011) Positive Press Vocal Point on The Sing-Off (Sharon, 2009) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1fUFH-SBBk

Slide 17

In conclusion… LDS Church members may have had a rocky start in their relationships with the dominant U.S culture, but today they are well integrated, contributing members of our society. Because they have already demonstrated an ability to adapt to changing times and culture, I believe that the co-culture of the LDS Church is here to stay.
