The Artist: What is Evanescence? Evanescence is an American rock band which was formed in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1995 by Amy Lee & Ben Moody. The band consists of Amy Lee, Terry Balsamo, Tim McCord, Will Hunt & Troy McLawhorn and after releasing their first full-length album known as ‘Fallen’ in 2003 the band managed to sell more than 17 million copies worldwide allowing the band to win two Grammy Awards and seven nominations. Though the band doesn’t really have a set genre of music a lot of different magazines have noted the band to be Symphonic metal or gothic rock. However, Amy Lee the lead singer of the band stated; “We’re definitely a rock band, but the twist is that the band’s music is epic, dramatic, dark rock.”
The cost Deniz and I were unable to find the cost for the production of the music video
the DIRECTOR Philipp Stölzl, (Born in 1967) is a Director of Films, Music Videos and Operas. He was the director for the Evanescence ‘Bring me to Life’ music video. In 1997, he filmed his first music video "Du hast" by Rammstein, and since then he has been one of the most sought-after directors in the field. Stölzl has also worked with a-ha and Anastacia, as well as German acts like Die Toten Hosen, Die Ärzte and directed the video for Madonna’s hit "American Pie“He has also filmed high-profile commercials for brands such as Sony, Rolex and Cruzcampo.
what STYLE OF VIDEO IS IT? This music video is a hybrid as it contains a mixture of characteristics from performance, abstract and narrative. The abstract elements come from the use of strange characters within the video that appear to have no immediate link with the lyrics of the song. We find this video also being a narrative as the lyrics tie in with the overall storyline and the musicians appear to ‘act out’ and give meaning to the lyrics throughout the video. There is also a performance element as we see the band ‘performing’ the song in a room as the video runs its course.
WHY DID WE CHOOSE THIS VIDEO? We both decided to chose this video because of different views as well as similar ones. Kayleigh chose this video as it is ‘Original’ and Deniz chose the video because it was simply meaningful and shows the story behind the lyrics unraveling. The similar choice of this video was because the video itself shows a deeper and hidden meaning within the song. The song has a lot of spiritual meaning and is linked to the artists’ real life experiences.
