Just this side of Heaven is a place Allie was special in so many ways.  Always smiling, always ready to play, she loved showing, chasing cats, riding in the car, chewing on bully sticks and eating, not necessarily in that order.  My last memories of her are playing a game of tag in the front yard the week before she passed away.  I will always see her in the smiling faces of her descendants. Called the Rio will always be remembered by us as a sweet, loving boy with a twinkle in his eye. His excellent type, beautiful head and lovely dark almond eye were only surpassed by his wonderful temperament. All in all, Rio was a dog that caught the eye because he was lovely both inside and out. His passion was stock work and he especially loved working sheep. We are glad to know that Rio passed on his wonderful qualities to his outstanding offspring. His progeny are, indeed, his legacy to the breed. We take comfort in knowing that through them Rio lives on. Throughout his life Rio had many admirers. He is well remembered by them and much loved by us. It is our privilege to have shared our lives with him. Rio is deeply missed but he will forever live on in our hearts and minds. UCD Group Winning, Multiple Group Placing Can. CH. Teseko’s Faithful as my Shadow CD CGN HIC (ALMOST an American CH.- both majors, 11 points, Group 4 placement) Dear Shay, I want you to know that I love you. You were the first Belgian to enter my life. You introduced me to an entire new world. You were my shadow, my companion, and my best friend. You were my world. You were a beautiful, confident Belgian with a happy temperament. There were only two times in your life where you threatened a human, and both those times I am glad you did, as I had felt at the time that my safety was compromised - I knew you protected me. You loved people, you LOVED to show, and your record was incredible. #2 Belgian (#1 Tervuren) in Canada two years running, and that was without even trying. What a high you gave me with those successes! Then, in early 2006, your world changed, our world changed. After the surgery to remove your broken dewclaws, you were not the same. You were then diagnosed hypothyroid and were neutered. After you were neutered, every time I loaded the van or bathed a dog for a show, you knew, and you were so excited. It broke my heart not to take you - you were so very sad. This year things turned for the worst. You became scared of the entire world. You were scared in the house, you were scared in your yard. You were just scared - and I mean terrified. We took more blood, we tested for everything. We raised meds, changed meds, added meds. You had a seizure, and another seizure. I consulted with Dr. Dodds and with the university. I did everything I could think of. Nothing helped. Things only got worse. Two days ago you came to me, tail between your legs, your body trembling in fear. You laid your head on my lap and stared up into my eyes. Were you asking me something? To make it stop? Please mom, make it stop.... I think so. You were a boy who was not afraid of anything. You were a confident, outgoing boy who was ready to take on the world. But that was not who you were anymore. It broke my heart. My love for you is so very strong. You are my HEART! My precious, precious boy... I love you... Mom HEART Dog of Charlotte Myers, Spiritus Belgians

That pet goes to the Rainbow Bridge For many years I had wanted a Belgian Tervuren, but never could I actually believe I could afford one. Well one day I was looking through the Weekly Trader that carries many BYB & puppy mill ads. I found an ad for a Belgian Tervuren female FS. I called the ad and talked to a lady in about a 4yr.old bitch she had FS. We went and I bought her. She was bred and due to deliver in the near future. The lady signed all the paper work over to me for the bitch and the litter. This lady was a commercial/puppy mill breeder(selling puppies to brokers for resale to pet stores).   Well, when the puppies came they were whelped in my home in the back room in a wading pool...There were 10 healthy puppies! After the puppies were weaned I gave two to a couple of friends and I kept Zandra. I later found their mother a home on a farm.   I started teaching Zandy obedience at a young age and by four months old she could do out of sight stays. When I started showing her in Obedience, she & I were very novice. I was nervous and that made her very nervous, so it took us a while before we actually Qualified. Zandy did get her CD at 23 months of age. Then one spring we were in Columbia for a Fun Match, during her Open class Zandy got too nervous and broke her out of sight down stay. When the judge tried to stop her from leaving the ring Zandy threatened the judge. I retired her from Obedience that day. It just made her too nervous and she wasn't happy in the ring. If they don't like what they are doing, then I don't think they should be forced to keep on with it.   In the meantime, I had thought a lot about breeding Zandy, but I could only think of breeding her to a Champion; then I came to the realization that NO ONE with a CH. Terv would breed to my Zandy(PUPPY MILL conceived ).YIKES! ! So I spayed her at 14 months of age.   I brought  Zandy out of retirement to try her hand at Rally. She got a score of 98 with placements her first 2 legs...then a 95 for her last leg for her RN...She also Qed for her first leg for her RA with a score of 92..not too bad for an old girl of 9yrs. But Arthritis prevented her from finishing her RA.   Zandra was instrumental in my getting Glory later on and becoming part of the Belgian community so to speak. I owe Zandra SO much...she taught me about ethics…and how wrong it was to breed dogs for money. My dogs are my life and I owe it all to Zandy.   When it was time to send her to the bridge, I had her vet come here to do it.. She was born in this house and went to sleep here on her own bed in the living room of our home.  Zandra lost her battle with Lymphoma Feb. 2nd. of this year.   Now that you all have read this, you will understand just how much Zandra meant to me. Cheyenne came to us by plane and bounced out of the crate with a “what’s next?” attitude. She greeted everyone and every new opportunity with unbridled enthusiasm. That enthusiasm was not always appreciated by conformation judges (one of whom said “she wants to jump on me, doesn’t she?” with a disapproving look on her face). That enthusiasm was her best and worst trait in the agility ring. So that they can run and play together. "Summer," was the puppy who was born complaining; some folks didn’t think she had potential as a show quality puppy, but there was always something special about her in my eyes. She also had little black tips on her toes that looked as though she'd stepped in a bucket of tar. I sent her for socializing to my very dear friend, Susan, and she fell in love with her, too. We decided to co-own her. She was very special; she never met a stranger and had to be restrained from kissing the judges when they examined her. Susan trained and showed Summer, easily earning her CH, CD, NAJ and her HT, which earned her the ABTC Versatility title, the same year her grandmother Maisey earned hers. She had one litter of puppies, was a very good, devoted mother, although once they had their teeth, she supervised them from a distance. Two of her youngsters have both their majors, one of those also has two Best In Sweepstakes too. She was nearly ready to compete for her CDX when she suddenly left us, at 7 years old, way too soon.... Owner: Susan Bryant Breeder/co owner: River!Run, Fran M. Friedman Ch. We got to do so many wonderful things together. She was my best friend and knew my deepest secrets, a true "heart dog". We have seen tremendous highs and suffered through some serious dark times together...She helped me through life with a waggy tail and a "we can do this mom" attitude that has been my rock for over 15 years. She has literally housebroken every dog/puppy here for the last 12+ years. Maisey and Summer earned their ABTC Versatility Award the same year!! And our friends are warm and comfortable A puppy named “Willem” came into our lives in the summer of 1991. He was the little orange boy with tremendous presence. Kay Maves and Sharon Redmer predicted that he would do great things for he had that undeniable combination of “style” and “heart”. Willem changed our world! By the age of 3, Willem became a multiple group winner and placer. He had multiple National Specialty “Selects” and a BISS win. Willem was in the top Ten in both breed (1995) and Agility (1999). He earned his MX and MXJ at 8 years of age and his TD at the age of 10. Bred selectively, Willem has passed on to his children not only his sweetness but his exuberance for life. Willem’s children are accomplished and you will find among them a National Specialty multiple “Select”, a National Specialty BOS, a top ten agility dog, a multiple group placer and countless offspring with American and Canadian CHs, TDs, TDXs and UDs. Willem passed on April 11, 2007. As we laid Willie to rest on that April day, we held him tightly ...we wanted to always remember how he smelled and how he felt to touch. He knew that we were with him at the end and that we loved him deeply. Mike wrote to his friend that morning saying that "even at almost 16 years of age he never quit, always demanding our love and attention. He never suffered for anything, at least not until the last 12 hours of his life. We fulfilled our last obligation to our wonderful boy, helping him to cross over, free from pain to play in the clouds forever". In our dreams of days and times gone by Multi-Group Winning Multi-Obedience Class Winning ABTC National Specialty BOSP Sweeps and RWD Multi-Regional Specialty BV Sweeps CH Aftershock Lord Gabriel CDX RN Will They Be Remembered? As I looked through the photos of the most recent ABTC National Specialty, I wondered...would anyone remember Gabriel. After all, even with all he accomplished, during his career, he has been out of the spotlight for quite a while. That question was put to rest last Sunday, May 7, at the Clemson Kennel Club Rally Trial. A friend and I were talking, with one of the Stewards, about the friend's 6-year old dog. The Steward mentioned that, at their 2005 trial, there was "this dog, he must have been an old champion." She said she became quite emotional, watching this dog. She then remarked that it was a Terv. Immediately, my friend and I realized she was talking about Gabriel. A year has past, and yet this lady still remembers Gabriel, making his way through his first two Rally Novice courses. It had brought tears to her eyes, as it had done mine. So, for anyone who ever had a question, the answer is…Yes, They Will Be Remembered. Larry Cooper, a.k.a. Gabriel’s Dad May 9, 2006

The animals are happy and content, Spiffy was my once in a lifetime dog who changed my life. She had it all—beauty that literally stunned people, fluid movement the likes of which is rarely seen today, a bombproof, working temperament, and a charismatic, adorable personality. In the world of dog sports, Spiffy excelled as a veteran. After earning her first agility title at age 9, she completed her HT and CD in short order, becoming a Versatile Tervuren at 10 ½. Spiffy’s love for showing was immortalized in a Marmaduke comic panel. At 15 ½, she had a ball greeting people at last December’s Eukanuba Meet the Breeds. Spiffy was a consummate ambassador for her breed, and a quintessential tervuren.

Without a doubt, he was the most incredible dog I have ever been privileged to share my life with. George was imported to the USA from England as a puppy, and became the foundation stud dog for Montage Belgians. He was a triple champion -- American, Canadian and UKC, with multiple group placements in both the US and Canada, and a Best in Specialty Show win at the UBSDA 1993 National at only 15 months of age. He passed the ATTS test for courage and stability, and he was certified by Therapy Dogs International, serving for two years as a therapy dog with autistic children. George was an enthusiastic performance dog, but a shoulder injury while herding prevented advanced competition. He did pass on his working/performance ability and at age 13, earned a "Performance Breeder's Achievement Reward" (P-BAR) given by the ABTC for performance titles achieved by offspring and grand-offspring. For a stud dog to earn a P-BAR, 100 total points must be accumulated in herding and/or agility titles. This was a huge honor for George and for me as a breeder! It would be easy to go on about the accomplishments of George and those of his many offspring and grand-offspring. Not so easy to summarize a lifetime of companionship. George lived a long and healthy life and was vigorous in his last year. He traveled many places with my family and we had some great adventures, from backpacking in the Sierras to swimming alongside me to and from shore off a boat in order to visit a bird research station, hanging out at the scientists hut while I went to the rookery. When I moved from California to New York, George enjoyed the beach life and became a loving guardian to my daughter Mulan who arrived from China. When George was 12, we moved to Manhattan and he thoroughly enjoyed his senior years as a city dog. We spent our summers in the mountains and shared wonderful times with friends and fur family. I have so many memories with my George! He was a most amazing companion, dear to me beyond any words. I am grateful for all the time we shared together. George will live on in my heart always.

You cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. Barbara Leigh Carter, 44, of Marietta, Georgia died January 20, 2008, in Wellstar Hospice surrounded by family and friends after a 20 month battle with cancer. Leigh was born December 20, 1963 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Most of her younger years were spent in Oak Ridge, Tennessee where she completed high school in 1982. She attended the University of Georgia graduating in June, 1986 with a degree in criminal justice. She recently completed 20 years of service as a Litigation Paralegal with Powell Goldstein of Atlanta, Georgia. Leigh worked with many attorneys in several areas of litigation including securities and fiduciary litigation, business litigation and family law. She will be sincerely missed by all of her colleagues. Leigh's love of animals started at a very early age. As soon as she was able, she got her own dogs, her Cocker Spaniels, Addie and Molly. Because she loved them she began to devote time to Cocker Spaniel Rescue where she spent hours fostering and rehabilitating Cockers that had had a less than wonderful life. Once she had done her magic with these `rescued' dogs she placed them in their forever homes. During this time she discovered that she really liked the Belgian Tervuren breed. This led her to get Gia followed soon by Tag. Leigh spent hours researching pedigrees and genetic problems making her a `go to' authority for anyone looking to get a Tervuren or have a litter of puppies. She was instrumental in the formation of the Southeast Belgian Tervuren Club, serving for many years as president. This club now sponsors one of the largest regional and supported breed shows for Tervuren in the southeast. Leigh was currently serving on the board of the national breed club, the American Belgian Tervuren Club, and chairing the Awards Committee. She had held many other positions at the national and local level, all in the interest of serving and promoting the breed she loved so much. Not one to rest, she found out that she enjoyed herding with Tag and since there were few opportunities in the South to showcase this talent, she worked at finding a way to change this, thus becoming a founding member of the North Georgia All Breed Herding Dog Association where she held several offices and was currently serving on the board. This club now sponsors four herding trials a year; once again Leigh's efforts coming to fruition. Molly and Boo preceded Leigh, but her beloved Tag, Gia and Addie were by her side during her recent fight. They were her constant companions and strongest supporters. Their devotion to her mirrored her devotion to them. Leigh Carter 12/20/63-01/20/08 and her beloved “Tag”

And you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, U-AGII, U-CD,UKC CCH, AKC CH Magic’s Breez’n The South CD, HSAs, NA, OAJ, TT, FCT I could never do Monte justice with just words. He was my introduction to the Belgian Shepherd world and has forever changed my life. Through the thick and thin and the ups and downs. He was amazing. He was my introduction to all of the performance events, and he did each event with gusto. There was always more to try and more to do and he never let me down. At the same time he could hold his own in the conformation ring, proving that Belgians can do it all. COTAH came to be, because of him, he did everything those letters stand for. I am proud to have his sons and daughters to remember him through. Until we meet again, Mr. Monte Man, I miss you. “Rachel” AKC CH Yesacs Its Showtime CD, PT, TT, SCT “Rachel” 1/25/98 – 11/4/07 Rachel was my trickster. She found humor in every day life. Smart as smart comes, she learned everything you could ask of her, whether she implemented the learning was completely up to her of course. From the time she saved my butt in the obedience ring when I was so sick I couldn’t remember what I was doing there, to the time she knocked me on my butt with her enthusiasm on the recall, she never once lost her zest for life. I cannot say she was what I was looking for at the time our paths crossed, but she was exactly what I needed. Although she was not the star in the conformation rings she has produced multiple regional specialty winners bitch’s, regional specialty best in sweeps, and a supported show best of breed. She also has kids with agility, obedience, and rally titles. Keep spinning grand girl, I miss you and I see you everyday in your kids faces. Loved and Missed by Stephanie Tones-Jack

So long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. CH BARRON’S OPTION T’BUY D’COEUR “BARON” 06/30/92 – 02/07/06 Baron was our first male Terv. He was bred by Cathy Modica of Plein De Coeur Kennel in Escondido, CA. While he was a Champion of Record, he never really enjoyed the show ring. He was happiest at home and in his yard playing with the Frisbee and tennis ball. He was the kind of Terv that never wanted to disappoint you and if he thought he had, you could tell his feelings were hurt. Even as a puppy, he didn’t get into much mischief – very in-terv like. Baron was so very patient, never demanding attention, he just knew that attention would come his way when it was his turn He was the sweetest dog. Baron was part of our family for 13 years, 8 months BIS/BIS NATIONAL SPECIALTY SELECT CH SHUMAKER HILL’S DESPERADO “BART” 10/17/96 – 02/28/08 Bart was our second male Terv. He was bred by Mike & Kathy Wagner of Shumaker Hill Kennel in Buckhannon, WV. To say that Bart was a mischievous pup and adolescent is an understatement. But he had a certain spark in his eye, a look that made you know he was going places. Bart had a great show career with Michelle Edling. Together they attained an impressive record of 242 BOB’s, 89 Group placements – including 12 Group 1’s, and a Best in Show and a Best in Specialty Show. He produced 16 offspring. His sons and daughters include Champions of Record and performance titled dogs. These include BIS/BISS CH Sky Acres Spy Plane “Spy”, the 2008 BOB winner at the Westminster Kennel Club show and OTCH Ariel’s Escapade Through Time VCD2 UDX3 RE MX MXJ AXP AJP NF “Jamie”. Bart loved the show ring but once retirement came his way, he was content to be our “best friend”. Bart was part of our family for 11 years, 4 months – not nearly long enough for such a wonderful dog. Baron and Bart Loved and missed by: Gary & Kathy Nagy
