Veldfundi ..Veld…Fundi..
Any Idea what that means?
Yes?... Then you must live...
Here
Or here
Maybe even somewhere here
But you are probably from South Africa
Well then… What does it mean?
The word “Fundi” is derived from the Zulu word “Umfundi” which means learner or alternatively “Umfundisi”, teacher or preacher. The Swahili language specifies “Fundi” to be a craftsman in a specific field. In South Africa it is also commonly used in English and Afrikaans as with most languages spoken locally to refer to an expert or wizard at a discipline or subject.
“Veld” is an Afrikaans word derived from the Dutch word “Veldt”; it is the translation of the English word “Field”. “Veld” usually refers to an undeveloped piece of land as in the unspoilt outdoors, but mostly in the context of grassland to sparse bush and normally with the exclusion of forest, mountain and beach. It is the South African equivalent of the Australian Outback or the American Prairie. The word is also used in the same way as the English field as in rugby field or battle field etc.
Both these words are used in everyday speech by most South Africans and despite the fact that either word may not be from the individual’s mother tongue is known and used frequently. The meaning of the combination of these two words, “Veld” and “Fundi”, automatically has a unique meaning and hints at the combination of traditional wisdoms from vastly diverse backgrounds and cultures in South Africa.
