What is a superstition? A superstition is a belief that people follow. Some people believe if they do something they will have bad luck. For example some people believe that if you walk under a ladder you will have bad luck for seven years. Superstitions are just beliefs. Calling it a belief is offensive to those who believe because it is like calling something you believe in fake. Beliefs are something you think just because somebody else doesn’t believe doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. It might mean they don’t realize it because they think they don’t believe.
There are many people who believe in superstitions. When you call a superstition fake it is like calling something you believe in fake. A person may believe in a superstition very strongly but when you call it a superstition you are saying its not real its just something you think.
Have you ever heard of Friday the 13th. It is a very superstitious day. Many people believe that if you break a superstition you will have bad luck for seven years “see a penny pick it up and all day you’ll have good luck.”
Examples of superstitions Tipping over salt Some people believe that if you knock over salt its bad luck. People put some of the salt in their right hand and throw it over their left shoulder after they knock it over.
Horseshoes are believed to be luck if placed the right way. If the open end of the u shape is facing down the horseshoe is believed to be unlucky and if the open end of the u shape is facing up it is believed to be lucky. Because of the way this horseshoe is laced it is believed to be lucky
When people make buildings they sometimes font mark the 13th floor because they believe that thirteen is an unlucky number
