Event Summary With 90 percent of all skin cancers caused by sun exposure, The Headwear Association (THA) held the 2nd annual “Hat Day in the Sun.” Hat Day in the Sun is an annual national public awareness campaign to educate adults and children about how the right hat can protect against skin cancer, premature skin damage, and the advanced aging process. On Friday, June 19, 2009 to coincide with the first weekend of summer, THA members gave away close to 3,000 wide-brimmed sun-protection hats nationwide. Participating cities included: Philadelphia; New York; Jersey Shore; Lancaster, PA; Chicago, Annapolis, MD; Delray Beach, FL; Dallas, San Diego; Carlsbad, CA; Sebastopol, CA and Stockton, CA.

Philadelphia Outback Trading, Hats in the Belfry and Philadelphia Rapid Transit combined forces in two locations in Center City Philadelphia to give away a few hundred hats. WPVI-TV 6ABC camera crew shot video footage of event and took hats back to the studio for the anchors.

Lancaster, PA Bollman Hats distributed 500 hats to record crowds at Binns Park. WGAL-TV covered the event during their 5-7am broadcast.

Jersey Shore NES Enterprises, Kathy Jeanne Inc. and Jay Gerish Co. gave out more than 400 hats to enthusiastic beach goers in Long Branch, NJ – Pier Village. It was graduation day for some of the local schools and there were a lot of young people who stopped by in big groups and loved the free hats. They had a great location and look forward to doing it again next year

New York Kangol participated in Hat Day in the Sun by handing out 100 assorted Tropic Casual Sun Hats on Coney Island.  Each hat had the provided Headwear Association postcard tucked into it.  People were thrilled to receive the free hats and appreciated the sun protection initiative.

Annapolis, MD Hats in the Belfry distributed 100 hats provided by Dorfman-Pacific + Kathy Jeanne, Inc. – and were literally out of hats in less then 20 minutes.

Sebastopol, CA Amy Smith, a custom hat milliner helped give away 200 hats from San Diego Hat Co. and Dorfman-Pacific at Whole Foods in Sebastopol, CA – 55 miles north of San Francisco.
