School Accountability

Slide 22

Why do we need school accountability?

Slide 23

1991 Florida Legislature passed the Education Reform and Accountability Act Calling for the Creation of State Academic Standards and Assessment The state standards are called the Sunshine State Standards The assessment tool is called the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test

Slide 24

Why do we need standards? For all Florida Schools to have a baseline standard as to what should be taught To have a seamless articulation from grade to grade To adequately prepare students for the workforce, college, or technical school. To move to higher order thinking context.

Slide 25

What does FCAT do? Measures Reading, Writing, Math, and Science skills students should have acquired by grade level Helps teachers, principals, and superintendents determine level of success of students Helps teachers, principals, and superintendents develop a baseline for an individualized plan for each student Determines a student’s growth from year to year (a learning gain) Helps teachers, principals, and superintendents determine level of success of teachers in teaching Sunshine State Standards

Slide 26

FCAT Myths FCAT is requiring teachers to “teach the test”. Teachers have had to change what they were teaching. The FCAT administrations take too much time away from instruction. FCAT is not reliable or valid. Students must pass the FCAT before being promoted to the next grade.
