Tannery effluents Chrompet, a suburb of Chennai,the samples collected from 66 dug wells showed the ground water to be highly untreated tannery effluents and toxic heavy metals such as iron, lead and manganese were found in drinking water.
Tirupur have many textile & dyeing industries. The waste products from this industry is Highly toxicant to Humans and Plants and Aquatic living organisms. Per yr 8,33,365.75 tons of hazardous waste is liberated . Among this about 77% ,pollutes water in one or another way. E.g Though Bhavani river is away from Tirupur, it was polluted through the underground water system.
In Ambattur, Alkaline Batteries Ltd., Is situated. The wastes from this industry contains Mercury, Cr, Lead. This pollutes the river and it makes the river unfit for the Aquatic organisms to live till 40 km.
Temporal and spatial variations in the concentration of aluminium, iron, zinc and copper were investigated both in water and sediment of two stations fixed in Tuticorin coastal waters polluted by the disposal of fly ash from the shore-based thermal power station
The Koovam river in Chennai, is once a source for Good water…..But due to water pollution it is Famous world wide as a Sewage river.
