I love the picture collages on the wall – they are really artistic and well-done. It’s amazing that you teach at the first high school in Illinois! Granted, the building is terribly old but the tradition must give you pride. One door?!?! Wow, that’s got to be troublesome. What do the students think about it? Do you think your school needs that added safety? What is your opinion of uniforms? Do you think they help with discipline problems and other factors that concern schools? I like the way you surveyed your students and found out that they wanted competitions and then your incorporated that in your unit. I also like the way you make your students responsible for themselves. I get tired of students not taking responsibility for themselves. And, I think many counselors and some teachers do a disservice to students when they try to “hold their hand” too much. Yes! I find that sometimes, the students are embarrassed to “showcase” their strengths. They don’t think it’s “cool” to be smart or talented at something academic. It’s a tragedy… I loved the rap song project…I wanted to keep reading! I think this is a powerful unit and I think you’ve analyzed it critically and completely. I think it will be an even stronger/better unit next year. The fact that you participated with the students shows that you are committed to improving both yourself and your curriculum! It’s longer than Jeanne recommended but I think it’s all necessary and informative.
