The first Olympic Games The first Olympic Games were in Olympia in Greece in 776 BC. There was one race and the prize was a red apple. Women did not run in the Games.

Olympic traditions There were no wars during the Olympic Games. All the wars stopped. The motto of the Olympics was “Citius, Altius, Fortius”, which is Latin for "Faster, Higher, Stronger"

The Olympic flame The Olympic flame keeps burning throughout the Games. This tradition started in ancient Greece. Nowadays it is lit in Olympia in Greece and travels to the city where the Olympics are held.

Prizes There are three prizes for each event - a gold medal, a silver medal and a bronze medal.
